Poor Jakartans get aid from Malaysia<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Malaysian government on Tuesday donated
\nfoodstuffs for 74,900 poor Jakartans in an expression of
\nsolidarity between the neighboring countries.<\/p>\n
The donation of 749,050 kilograms of rice, 11,580 bottles of
\ncooking oil and 10,000 kilograms of sugar was symbolically handed
\nover by Malaysian Ambassador Zainal Abidin to the city's five
\nmayors in a ceremony at City Hall.<\/p>\n
The ceremony was also attended by State Minister of Food,
\nDrugs and Horticulture A.M. Saefuddin, Minister of Trade and
\nIndustry Rahardi Ramelan and Governor Sutiyoso.<\/p>\n
In a short speech, Ambassador Abidin said that, \"the
\ngovernment and people of Malaysia are sympathetic to our brothers
\nand sisters in Indonesia who are being affected by the present
\neconomic crisis.\"<\/p>\n
The donated goods will provide 10 kilograms of rice, a quarter
\nof a bottle of cooking oil and a quarter of a kilogram of sugar
\nto each of the 74,900 recipients.<\/p>\n
According to Sutiyoso, the city administration had often
\nreceived donated foodstuffs since the current economic crisis hit
\nthe country.<\/p>\n
\"But the present donation (from the Malaysian government) is
\nspecial to Jakartans because it is given during the Muslim
\nfasting month of Ramadhan,\" the governor added.<\/p>\n
The assistant city secretary of Social Welfare Affairs, Zaenal
\nArifin, said that the foodstuffs would be distributed to people
\nliving in slum areas throughout the city. (ind)<\/p>",
