        "content": "<p>Pollution complaints investigated<\/p>\n<p>Multa Fidrus, The Jakarta Post, Tangerang<\/p>\n<p>The office of the State Minister of the Environment is to deploy<br>\nan investigative team to analyze liquid waste allegedly dumped by<br>\nfive companies into rivers in Tangerang regency.<\/p>\n<p>Sugeng Prayitno of the minister's office said on Friday that<br>\nif the analysis results confirmed that the five companies had<br>\npolluted the rivers, the team would file a report with the police<br>\nfor further investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\"Complaints from regencies do not just stop at the minister's<br>\noffice. In fact, it is our duty to follow up on the case,\" he<br>\nsaid after a gathering with 26 district officials from Tangerang<br>\nto introduce the Environmental Law.<\/p>\n<p>Sugeng said environmental minister Nabiel Makarim would be<br>\nserious in processing any complaints on pollution and<br>\nenvironmental damage.<\/p>\n<p>\"Therefore, we are deploying a team to verify the regency's<br>\ncomplaints, then we can take them to court,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>However, he did not say when the team would be deployed.<\/p>\n<p>Under Chapter VIII, Article 40 of Law No. 23\/1997 on the<br>\nenvironment, authorized officers can be dispatched to investigate<br>\nallegations of pollution or environmental damage, and are obliged<br>\nto report their findings to the police.<\/p>\n<p>The regency's environmental agency had sent warnings to 25<br>\ncompanies earlier this year for allegedly dumping their liquid<br>\nwaste into the rivers.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the companies did not possess Environmental Impact<br>\nAssessment (Amdal) certificates, nor did they operate liquid<br>\nwaste treatment plants (IPAL) on their premises. Even those with<br>\ntreatment plants opted to dump their liquid waste into the rivers<br>\nto reduce operational costs.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 25 companies, 20 had improved their systems, but the<br>\nother five did not respond.<\/p>\n<p>Tangerang regent Ismet Iskandar filed complaints against the<br>\nfive companies to the minister's office on Aug. 20.<\/p>\n<p>Polluted rivers mostly flow into the Java Sea and had thus<br>\naffected fisheries in Tangerang's coastal areas. The fish farmers<br>\nhad to stop their activities, as their fish and shrimp died from<br>\nthe pollution.<\/p>",
