        "content": "<p>Poll watchdog denies calling for boycott<\/p>\n<p>BOGOR (JP): The unrecognized Independent Election Monitoring<br>\nCommittee denied yesterday circulating anonymous leaflets urging<br>\ntownspeople to boycott the May 29 general election.<\/p>\n<p>Heri Soba, secretary of the committee's local chapter, said<br>\nboycotting the general election was not on the organization's<br>\nagenda as the authorities seemed to think.<\/p>\n<p>\"We don't know anything about the leaflets,\" Heri said after<br>\nhe saw the head of the Bogor regency administration's<br>\nsociopolitical affairs department, Didi Wiardi.<\/p>\n<p>Heri met with Didi after he was twice summoned for an<br>\ninterview concerning the anonymous leaflets that had enraged the<br>\ngovernment and security authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Last week the police said they had seized 17 of the leaflets,<br>\nin which the independent poll watchdog and the Democratic<br>\nPeople's Party (PRD) were mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>PRD is an unrecognized party whose leaders are currently on<br>\ntrial for subversion, which carries a maximum penalty of death.<br>\nEleven of them have been charged with attempting to replace<br>\nPancasila and sowing hatred of the government.<\/p>\n<p>Heri said his committee's job was to monitor the upcoming<br>\nelection and report any violations to the public.<\/p>\n<p>\"We want to help make the election smooth and free from<br>\nviolations,\" Heri told The Jakarta Post. \"We want to cooperate<br>\nwith the public to achieve that.\"<\/p>\n<p>Didi said the authorities would continue to track down who had<br>\ncirculated the pamphlets.<\/p>\n<p>\"Somebody must have put up the leaflets,\" he said. \"It was<br>\ncertainly not done by a ghost.\"<\/p>\n<p>Antara reported that security authorities in Bandung were on<br>\nfull alert in anticipation of mass riots threatened by anonymous<br>\npamphlets.<\/p>\n<p>The leaflets said rioters would turn Bandung into a \"sea of<br>\nfire\" yesterday, as the nation remembered March 11, 1966, the day<br>\nthe then president Sukarno ordered Lt. Gen. Soeharto to restore<br>\norder.<\/p>\n<p>Security personnel, both in plain clothes and uniformed, were<br>\ndeployed in public places. No incidents were reported. (pan\/24)<\/p>",
