Poll watchdog aspirations<\/p>\n
The Chief Commander of the Armed Forces, Gen. Feisal Tanjung,
\nreminded provincial governors during a conference in Jakarta that
\nthe social dynamics presently at work in our society will be
\namong the challenges to be faced in next year's general election.
\nThe surge of creativity that is a result of those dynamics has
\nnot been wholly accommodated. As a result sociopolitical
\nconditions tend to fluctuate and the political temperature rises.<\/p>\n
The way in which the authorities have greeted the birth of the
\nIndependent Election Monitoring Committee indicates that the
\ngovernment is responding properly to the changes that are taking
\nplace in our society. Although the committee is regarded as being
\noutside the system, the government has not rejected it. It is
\nsort of being tolerated on condition that it does not disturb the
\nexisting system and that it does not position itself as a rival
\nto the official Elections Supervision Committee.<\/p>\n
Aside from being part of the dynamics of political development
\nin this country, new aspirations are also in accord with
\nconditions prevailing in the world. It has become something of a
\nregular pattern that anywhere general elections are held in
\ncountries that are in the process of establishing democracy, the
\nwish for having this kind of control emerges. In some cases those
\naspirations even work together with global networks or with the
\nUnited Nations. Being part of that global system, it should not
\nbe surprising that our country, too, is affected by this trend.<\/p>\n
We should all have the wisdom to position ourselves and to
\nrespond correctly to those new conditions. The aim of the
\nmonitoring committee is to improve the quality of the upcoming
\ngeneral election in order to ensure not only the formal
\nlegitimacy of the voting results, but also their political
\nmorality.<\/p>\n
