A Marquette Law School Supreme Court survey conducted in late\nJuly found that 88% of respondents said the US had not achieved its\naims, compared to just 12% who considered the war a success.\nFurthermore, 75% of those surveyed felt the war was not worth the cost,\nwhile 25% believed the effort was justified. Throughout the war, now in\nits fifth month, President Donald Trump has repeatedly asserted that his\nprimary objective is to ensure Tehran never acquires nuclear weapons.\nHowever, the Trump administration has provided status updates that\ncritics describe as contradictory regarding Iran\u2019s military capabilities\nand the state of its nuclear programme. Trump and Secretary of War Pete\nHegseth have claimed that Iran\u2019s nuclear capability has been diminished\nand its military devastated since the start of the war. Yet, amid these\nclaims, Iran has continued to launch deadly attacks on US forces and\npersistently strike vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. A failed\nmemorandum of understanding also included terms for Tehran and\nWashington to remove nuclear material from Iran, even though Trump had\npreviously touted the success of Operation Midnight Hammer in ending\nIran\u2019s nuclear ambitions. The conflict has had a direct impact on the\ncost of living for American citizens. A major side effect of the war has\nbeen the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil shipping route\nthrough which 20% of the world\u2019s oil supply passes. The strait\u2019s closure\nhas triggered domestic price hikes and shaken the global economy. On\nTuesday, Trump stated that Iran and Oman were nearing a resolution\nregarding the strait, adding that the waterway would be opened soon, \u2018Or\nthey will be hit very hard and then the strait will open.\u2019 Secretary\nHegseth presented the financial details of the conflict to the Senate\nAppropriations Committee last month alongside Chairman of the Joint\nChiefs of Staff General Dan Caine. The significant financial burden and\nthe uncertain outcome of the war are proving to be a major obstacle for\nthe Republican Party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
