        "content": "<p>Several political events occurred throughout Wednesday, ranging from\na special team to investigate the deaths of participants in the Sarjana\nPenggerak Pembangunan Indonesia (SPPI) programme to issues related to\ndirect regional elections. The Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of\nHealth have formed an investigation team to probe the cause of death of\nfive participants in the Basic Military Training for the SPPI programme,\npart of the Koperasi Desa\/Kelurahan Merah Putih initiative. Deputy\nMinister of Defence Donny Ermawan stated the joint team is tasked with\ncollecting data and uncovering the factors that led to the deaths of the\nparticipants during the training. Separately, the Ministry of Defence\ndecided to shorten the discipline and leadership training period for\nSPPI participants in the village cooperative programme to just two\nweeks. Originally, the basic military training directed at reserve\ncomponents had a longer duration, but Deputy Minister Ermawan said the\ntraining concept was changed to State Defence Training and its duration\nwas cut. Meanwhile, Research Associate at The Indonesian Institute,\nArfianto Purbolaksono, said the government and the House of\nRepresentatives need to focus on reforming the quality of local\ndemocracy following the Constitutional Court\u2019s ruling on regional\nelections. He noted that Decision Number 195\/PUU-XXIV\/2026 provides\nlegal certainty amid the strengthening discourse on changing the\nregional election mechanism to be conducted through the Regional\nPeople\u2019s Representative Council. In parliament, all factions in\nCommission I of the House of Representatives approved two draft laws\nratifying defence cooperation between Indonesia, Turkey, and Malaysia\nduring a working meeting with the government. Commission I Chairman Utut\nAdianto expressed hope that the commission-level approval would\nfacilitate the implementation of defence cooperation with the two\npartner countries after having a stronger legal foundation.\nAdditionally, Deputy Chairman of Commission II Bahtra Banong said his\ncommission respects the Constitutional Court\u2019s ruling that regional head\nelections will continue to be held directly by the people. However,\nBahtra noted that Commission II is still focusing on revising the\nElection Law, as the Regional Election Law has not yet been included in\nthe 2026 national legislation programme.<\/p>",
