Politicians parrot Sukarno<\/p>\n
BANYUMAS, Central Java: There is something missing in
\nIndonesian Democratic Party's campaign attributes this season:
\npictures of first president Sukarno.<\/p>\n
Pictures of the late Sukarno, founder of the Indonesian
\nNationalist Party which merged with Christian parties to form
\nthe Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) in 1973, used to be highly
\npopular in winning public support.<\/p>\n
Carrying pictures during campaigns has been officially banned
\nbut the rule has not been entirely heeded. Many PDI campaigners
\ndon Sukarno or Megawati T-shirts.<\/p>\n
Megawati is Sukarno's eldest daughter who was toppled from
\nPDI's top slot by Soerjadi in a breakaway congress last year. She
\nstill insists she is the legitimate party boss.<\/p>\n
The popularity of Bung Karno, as Indonesia's founding father
\nwas popularly called, is still very much alive and used by
\npoliticians to lure people.<\/p>\n
Many campaigners from PDI, United Development Party and Golkar
\nhave imitated Bung Karno's oratory style to inflame public
\nemotion.<\/p>\n
PDI politicians opposed to Megawati are among the copycats.
