It is indeed interesting to note economist Faisal Basri's
\nrecent statement that the period of one year is too short to
\njudge the performance of President Megawati as a whole. The
\nformer executive of the National Mandate Party also said it was
\nunfair to make an evaluation at present because the accumulation
\nof complications inherited from the past imposed a great burden.<\/p>\n
The statement is very realistic and logical as it is
\nimpossible to demand the President's achievements while her
\ngovernment has only just started ruling. The various consequences
\nof the country's multidimensional crisis are already so serious,
\nnot to mention the different problems left behind by the New
\nOrder regime, which need thorough settlement.<\/p>\n
We all should think in a realistic and concrete manner because
\nwhoever the president is, the plight of the nation can in no way
\nbe solved overnight.<\/p>\n
What Faisal Basri indicated was obviously based on the concern
\nof an economist who had observed considerable diversion in the
\nlatest political developments. Politicians have so far only found
\nfault with others, giving no encouragement nor solution.
\nUnsurprisingly, Faisal Basri resorted to the comment that
\n\"Megawati is disturbed by bastard politicians\", who are virtually
\npolitical phantoms.<\/p>\n
This situation causes public fear. If our politicians have the
\ncharacter as described by the economist, the government will have
\nno time to concentrate on development efforts to rid the nation
\nof this multidimensional crisis. Then, when can the economy
\nrecover, and the people enjoy development gains and live
\npeacefully?<\/p>\n
