Political maneuverings affect the economy<\/p>\n
Factions in the House of Representatives, particularly those
\nof the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle and Golkar, have
\nbeen busily maneuvering lately. What binds them together is
\ncommon interests such as the recent dismissal of state minister
\nof investment and state enterprises development Laksamana Sukardi
\nand the minister of industry and trade, Yusuf Kalla, who is
\nprominent member of Golkar. Another factor that brings them
\ntogether is dissatisfaction with the government's performance,
\nespecially in economic matters.<\/p>\n
It is not clear at this point what the actual objective of all
\nthis maneuvering is -- a stratagem in which the Axis Force is
\nalso playing a part. That may only become clear in another month
\nor two. Whatever happens until then could, therefore, still help
\ndetermine what form that final objective will take. One
\nspeculation is that President Abdurrahman Wahid will be removed
\nfrom his position on grounds of inability to overcome this
\nnation's many difficulties.<\/p>\n
This kind of speculation obviously is not very encouraging for
\nthe money market and investors. Under such conditions, the rise
\nof a more conducive situation is very much dependent on the
\nactions of the members of our political elite. As long as they
\ncontinue to put their party's or group's interests first, our
\neconomy will be unfavorably affected.<\/p>\n
