        "content": "<p>Political deregulation<\/p>\n<p>A logical consequence of trade liberalization is the growing<br>\nimportance of political deregulation. This is important because<br>\nso far many unhealthy business practices are being conducted<br>\nunder the cover of government policy.<\/p>\n<p>These were the views expressed by the economist Edy Suandi<br>\nHamid M. Ec. during a discussion at the Center for Strategic and<br>\nPolicy Studies of Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta on<br>\nThursday.<\/p>\n<p>Actually such a view is not new. Years ago in his popular book<br>\nErsatz Capitalism in Southeast Asia, Yosihara Kunio wrote that<br>\nwhat was happening in Southeast Asia -- Indonesia included --<br>\nwas the growth of a pseudo capitalism. It was artificial because<br>\nthe entrepreneurs did not develop from the bottom up, but grew<br>\nbecause they were given facilities by the government. Without<br>\ngovernment support they would not be able to compete.<\/p>\n<p>It is gratifying that lately the intent to eradicate the<br>\npractices of collusion and corruption have been repeatedly stated<br>\nby the government. However, that intent would be easier to turn<br>\ninto reality if supported by a strong public control. And to be<br>\nable to adequately perform such a control function the most<br>\nimportant thing that must be assured first is political<br>\nderegulation, or political openness.<\/p>\n<p>The most difficult problem now is to equalize our perceptions<br>\nabout openness. Therefore, our hardest task now is to find a<br>\npoint of convergence where all those different perceptions could<br>\nmeet. For that purpose a climate that is conducive for dialogue<br>\nis needed.<\/p>\n<p>-- Republika, Jakarta<\/p>",
