Political communication<\/p>\n
The problem of communication, political communication in
\nparticular, has once again come to the fore, with the emphasis
\nnot on the normative aspects of the matter but on the practice of
\ncommunication in our daily community life.<\/p>\n
In his keynote address delivered at a seminar entitled A
\nReconstruction of our Republican Ideals at the Indonesian
\nInstitute of Sciences on Tuesday, State Minister of Environment
\nSarwono Kusumaatmadja noted that political communication in our
\nsociety is still poor. As a consequence we have difficulty in
\nsetting a course for political dialog that would bring awareness
\nof our national ideals among citizens.<\/p>\n
Our daily experience shows that those imperfections affect not
\nonly our political communication system, but society on a wider
\nscale. Our intellectuals, who should be in a better position to
\ndevelop a healthy climate of communication -- by its very nature,
\ntruth is always provisional and subject to change by new findings
\n-- are among those who are blamed for this lack of communication.
\nA diversity of views is part of the scholarly identity. Diversity
\ncreates and promotes a climate of creativity that can lead to
\nconflicting opinions and thereby encourage dynamism. Independence
\nas a part of the intellectual identity could create a fertile
\nclimate for dialog.<\/p>\n
