        "content": "<p>Policy on amusement center opposed<\/p>\n<p>Multa Fidrus, Tangerang<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Wahidin Halim's decision to relocate all existing<br>\nentertainment venues to the Pinangsia business and shopping<br>\ndistrict in Karawaci has come up against some strong opposition.<\/p>\n<p>Councilor Doni Astoto from the coalition faction said the<br>\nshopping district that lies on the border of Tangerang<br>\nmunicipality and Tangerang regency was surrounded by a<br>\nresidential area.<\/p>\n<p>\"I think it would be wiser if the mayor stopped issuing<br>\npermits for more entertainment venues, their presence has more<br>\nnegative implications than benefits,\" he said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to designate Pinangsia as an entertainment<br>\ncenter, bringing together massage parlors, cafes, pubs,<br>\nnightclubs, karaoke lounges, billiard halls and spas, was<br>\nstipulated in the mayor's decree issued on June 10.<\/p>\n<p>Many people have protested the decree, fearing that it would<br>\npave the way for unscrupulous businesspeople to open illicit<br>\nnight spots.<\/p>\n<p>Doni said the council had suggested the administration<br>\nreevaluate its decision.<\/p>\n<p>\"I doubt the relocation would reduce prostitution practices.<br>\nWhen former mayor M. Thamrin prohibited entertainment venues<br>\nhere, dozens of nightspots opened within a few years,\" he<br>\nremarked.<\/p>\n<p>Municipal administration spokesman Chaerudin said on Friday<br>\nthat the mayor would postpone the implementation of the decree<br>\nindefinitely.<\/p>\n<p>\"He said that in a meeting with a number of ulemas, public<br>\nfigures, non-governmental organizations and students on<br>\nWednesday,\" he added.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Islam Defenders Front (FPI), the Solidarity for<br>\nTangerang Muslim Community (SMIT) and the Indonesian National<br>\nYouth Committee (KNPI) have declared their support of the decree,<br>\nwhich they say would serve as a legal means to tighten control<br>\nover entertainment venues in the municipality.<\/p>",
