Policemen's attackers jailed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The South Jakarta District Court has sentenced
\ntwo thugs to five years imprisonment each for attacking police
\nofficers.<\/p>\n
Presiding judge I Gusti Ngurah Somya said at Monday's trial
\nthat Reza Lawalata and Idris Tuarita were proven guilty of
\nattacking Capt. Arman Depari and Lt. Budi Santosa in the Blok M
\nshopping area on March 6.<\/p>\n
Lt. Budi Santosa was killed in the attack. One of Budi's
\nalleged killers, Mario Lesbanu, was shot dead resisting arrest,
\nwhile another, Franky Jufrimaudu, died from an illness while in
\npolice custody.<\/p>\n
\"The defendants violated article 170 of the Criminal Code,\"
\nthe judge said, adding that their crime sparked public unrest.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Tobina Siahaan had previously demanded that the
\ncourt jail the defendants to 10 years each for the offense.<\/p>\n
According to the indictment, the defendants, together with
\nseven other hoodlums, identified as Amirzan Liskaloho, Zulkifli
\nNahumaruri, Franky Jufrimaudu, Mario Lesbanu, Stevanus van
\nCapele, Robinson Timisela and Jimiki Danyanto, attacked the
\nplain-clothed officers while they were parking their car at a
\nBlok M shopping complex.<\/p>\n
Budi was tortured by members of the gang before being stabbed
\nin the stomach. Arman escaped the attack. Police believe that it
\nwas Mario and Franky who killed Budi.<\/p>\n
Two other gang members, Amirzan and Idris, had been earlier
\nsentenced by the same court to four years and three years and 10
\nmonths in jail respectively on similar charges.<\/p>\n
The killing of Budi has sparked a massive operation against
\nhoodlums in the city and other areas.<\/p>\n
More than 14,000 suspected hoodlums have been netted during
\nthe operation.(29)<\/p>",
