Policemen trial continues<\/p>\n
BANDUNG: Four former police officers standing trial for
\nmistreating a Tasikmalaya Moslem teacher and his two students
\nhave admitted the wrongdoing, but pleaded that other officers
\ninvolved should be brought to court as well.<\/p>\n
The officers, who were dishonorably discharged over the
\nincident, said several of their colleagues should also be
\nquestioned for beating up Moslem teacher Mahmud Farid and his
\nstudents Habib and Ichsan. The mistreatment and rumors that the
\nteacher died from the beating sparked a riot, during which four
\npeople were killed and scores of buildings damaged.<\/p>\n
"It wasn't only the four of us," Agus Martadinata told the
\nmilitary tribunal. Agus Yulianto, Dedi Haeruddin, and Nursyamsi,
\nthe other three suspects, supported him. Agus Yulianto and Dedi
\nsaid they hit Mahmud only once each because the latter refused to
\nsquat jump as he was ordered to.<\/p>\n
The court was presided over by Col. CHK Pakpahan. Military
\nprosecutor Col. Ismail Bangun admitted that the former police
\nofficers' charge may have some truth in it.<\/p>\n
"But I do not have the authority to examine the other
\nofficers," he said.<\/p>\n
