The Indonesian passion for soccer apparently has even affected
\nthe police who are meant to be securing the preparatory committee
\n(PrepCom) meeting on sustainable development in Bali.<\/p>\n
Not even policemen on duty could resist the temptation to
\nwatch the soccer games, especially when the match was being shown
\nlive from the World Cup in South Korea and Japan.<\/p>\n
Police, passers-by and journalists huddled in front of a
\nsatellite television set on the back of the van of television

Ministers show disdain to NGOs<\/p>\n
Different ministers, different temperaments and different ways
\nof handling the public, as two of Indonesia's coordinating
\nministers showed.<\/p>\n
Coordinating Minister for the Economy Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-
\nJakti kept his cool when a member of the Indonesian Indigenous
\nPeople group warned him not to take anymore loans from foreign
\ncreditors in an open dialog with non-governmental organizations
\n(NGOs) on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The minister was seen nodding amicably as the person continued
\nhis frustrated rant directed at the government. The NGO
\nspokesperson claimed that Indonesia had treated indigenous people
\nunfairly.<\/p>\n
\"Don't just nod, write this down!\" he angrily ordered the
\nminister, who calmly claimed that everything was being stored
\ninside his head.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Social Welfare Jusuf
\nKalla blew his top when NGO members raised their voices in
\nprotest of what he was saying in a different dialog.<\/p>\n

Govt criticized for exploiting guards<\/p>\n
The presence of Balinese traditional village guards or
\npecalang has captured the attention of most delegates attending
\nthe current UN meeting in Nusa Dua, Bali.<\/p>\n
Everything appeared to be running smoothly until Wednesday
\nmorning when hundreds of NGO members staged a big rally at the
\nresort complex, which apparently provoked dozens of pecalang to
\nthe brink of an ugly, violent clash with the demonstrators.<\/p>\n

\nAssociation blamed the Indonesian government for involving
\npecalang as the security team to safeguard this UN-sponsored
\nmeeting.<\/p>\n
\"It is part of the politicization process of Balinese
\ntraditional community members,\" charged Arya.<\/p>\n
Pecalang guards are closely linked to the traditional village
\nof Banjar and now operate throughout Bali.<\/p>\n
\"They do not belong to any political party or other
\ninstitutions, only Banjar,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Each pecalang member was directly elected by the entire
\nvillage community.<\/p>\n
According to Balinese traditional rules, pecalang are obliged
\nto protect and to defend their respective village regardless of
\nthe situation.<\/p>\n
\"We assume that there is a systematic effort to ruin the image
\nof pecalang. We, the Balinese people, never had any intention to
