Policeman commits suicide in church<\/p>\n

Yogyakartans woke up on Monday morning to the news that a police
\nofficer had killed himself inside a church.<\/p>\n
Witnesses said the officer, Second Brig. Yohanes Widiyanto
\nYeni, 24, committed suicide by shooting himself in the head in
\nfront of a statue of the Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus
\ninside St. Antonius Church in Kotabaru after a morning service.<\/p>\n
Widiyanto was a member of the Cirebon Police's intelligence
\ndivision and an adjutant to the Cirebon Police deputy chief,
\nYogyakarta Police chief Adj. Comr. Condro Kirono said.<\/p>\n
A witness said Widiyanto entered the church at about 6:30 a.m.
\nand took a seat in a back pew. There were about 10 people in the
\nchurch when the suicide took place.<\/p>\n
\"He looked restless, walking back and forth, and appeared
\npanicked,\" said Agustinus Nyono, who is a cleaner at the church.<\/p>\n
He said Widiyanto was not in uniform.<\/p>\n
At about 7:30 a.m. two gunshots rang out in the church,
\napparently fired from Widiyanto's service revolver.<\/p>\n
It is unknown why the officer fired two shots, but Yogyakarta
\nPolice detectives said only one bullet pierced Widiyanto's skull.<\/p>\n
Local police took the body to Dr. Sardjito Hospital for an
\nautopsy.<\/p>\n
\"We are still investigating the motive for the suicide,\"
\nYogyakarta Police detectives chief Comr. A. Supardan said.<\/p>\n
Police removed from the scene the revolver, Widiyanto's
\nmotorcycle and two ID cards, one stating that he was a resident
\nof the Kalicodet police housing complex in Cirebon and the other
\na vehicle ownership license under the name of Magdalena Yuliati,
\na resident of Rancaekek, Cirebon.<\/p>\n
Condro said Widiyanto, who was single, was last seen in his
\noffice on Saturday.<\/p>\n
\"According to Cirebon Police deputy chief Comr. Imam Prakosa,
\nYohanes was a quiet and introverted young man. We are now waiting
\nfor the Cirebon Police to arrive and find a motive,\" said Condro.<\/p>\n
Police are also expecting the arrival of Widiyanto's family
\nfrom his hometown of Purwakarta, West Java.<\/p>\n
This is not the first time a police officer has committed
\nsuicide.<\/p>\n
In January last year, Kampar Police detectives chief First
\nInsp. Jhontua D. Hutagalung, 32, killed himself because of family
\nproblems.<\/p>\n
Jhontua reportedly attempted suicide at least three times
\nwhile serving as Tanjungpinang Police chief in the Riau Islands
\nin 2003. In response to these attempts, his superior officers
\nprohibited him from carrying a firearm.<\/p>\n
Economic hardship has been cited as the main motive for
\nsuicides in the country.<\/p>",
