Policeman beats reporter, PWI condemns<\/p>\n
PEKANBARU, Riau: A journalist filed a complaint with the
\nIndonesian Journalist's Association (PWI) Riau Branch on Monday,
\nsaying that he was a victim of a physical assault perpetrated by
\na police officer.<\/p>\n
Rinaldi, a journalist with Dumai Pos newspaper, said that he
\nwas hit in the face by Adj. Comr. Laksana, the chief of Mandau
\ndistrict police on Saturday, as he was having a conversation with
\na local politician at the Mandau district administration office.<\/p>\n
Rinaldi alleged that the assault was apparently prompted by
\nhis recent report that a police officer under Laksana's
\nsupervision had fired a warning shot during a recent protest
\ndemonstration at local company PT ADEI. He wrote that the warning
\nshot had caused unnecessary panic among the crowd. \"He was
\napparently pissed off by that report,\" Rinaldi said.<\/p>\n
Rinaldi, who was admitted to the hospital after the assault,
\ndemanded that the journalist association take up the
\ninvestigation of the case, and help bring the police officer to
\njustice.<\/p>\n
In response, Sutriyanto, the chairman of PWI in Riau, said
\nthat the association condemned the assault, and it would
\nimmediately send a letter to the Indonesian police chief
\nprotesting the officer's behavior.<\/p>\n
Separately, a spokesman for the Riau provincial police, Adj.
\nSr. Comr. S. Pandiangan said that the police would apologize for
\nthe incident and would later reprimand the police officer. -- JP<\/p>",
