Police vow to stay away from PDI conflict<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The national police pledged yesterday they would
\nstay away from any leadership conflicts within the Indonesian
\nDemocratic Party (PDI).<\/p>\n
Spokesman for the national police Brig. Gen. I Ketut Ratta
\nsaid the police will leave it up to PDI leaders to resolve the
\nconflict over the dual leadership of the East Java party chapter.<\/p>\n
\"It is their business and it is up to them to manage it,\" he
\nwas quoted by Antara news agency as saying.<\/p>\n
The PDI top leadership is currently split into two opposing
\ncamps in the handling of the East Java party leadership crisis.<\/p>\n
PDI chief Megawati Sukarnoputri has appointed Sucipto as the
\nprovincial party chapter chairman but her top aides, Edwin
\nSukowati and Gerry Mbatemooy, recognize Sucipto's arch rival,
\nLatief Pudjosakti.<\/p>\n
The crisis stemmed from the party's failure to elect the new
\nchapter leader in a congress earlier this year. Sucipto beat
\nLatief in the election but the result was declared invalid when
\nthe number of ballot papers counted was more than that of the
\neligible voters.<\/p>\n
With the conflict unresolved, the electoral board in the
\ncongress elected Latief, which received strong backing from the
\nEast Java governor but was opposed by Megawati.<\/p>\n
Megawati stepped into the battle, choosing Sucipto for the
\nlegitimate chapter chief with the East Java governor, who favored
\nLatief, refusing to recognize Sucipto.<\/p>\n
Megawati and Gerry plan to inaugurate their own choice this
\nweek, but none of them has obtained the necessary permit from the
\ngovernment for the ceremony.<\/p>\n
In September, Megawati had to cancel Sucipto's inauguration
\nafter the governor refused to issue the permit.<\/p>\n
Ratta said yesterday that the police headquarters in Jakarta
\ndelegated the permit permission to the East Java police.<\/p>\n
He declined to comment which camp the authorities should give
\nthe permit to.<\/p>\n
Ratta said the police had anticipated disruptive incidents in
\nthe planned inaugural ceremonies held by the opposing camps.
