        "content": "<p>Police vow to secure Jakarta during fasting month<\/p>\n<p>Damar Harsanto<br>\nThe Jakarta Post<br>\nJakarta<\/p>\n<p>Police vowed to tighten security to help secure the capital <br>\nduring the fasting month of Ramadhan, which starts on Nov. 16.<\/p>\n<p>\"We will increase our patrols to places that are considered at <br>\nhigh risk to crime to prevent crime from occurring,\" city police <br>\nspokesman Sr. Comr. Anton Bachrul Alam announced on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Anton said, for example, that police would intensify their <br>\npatrols to once every half an hour from the regular once every <br>\ntwo hours.<\/p>\n<p>He said that some 5,600 police personnel would be deployed to <br>\nback up the security operation.<\/p>\n<p>Anton said those police officers would be taken from those in <br>\ncharge of safeguarding the People's Consultative Assembly's (MPR) <br>\nAnnual Session.<\/p>\n<p>The MPR Annual Session ended on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The crime rate usually increases during the fasting month as <br>\nmore people need to survive due to the increasing prices of food <br>\nand other goods.<\/p>\n<p>Anton also said that the police had simultaneously launched <br>\ntwo operations targeting firecrackers, explosives, pornographic <br>\nVCDs, gambling and drugs. The operations codenamed Sadar Jaya IX <br>\nand Anti Narcotics (Antik), started on Oct. 25 and will run until <br>\nDec. 25.<\/p>\n<p>\"We will raid places in Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi that are <br>\nsuspected of manufacturing firecrackers,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>He did not include Parung, south of Jakarta, as the center of <br>\nfirecracker production. An accident reportedly took place in a <br>\nhouse where firecrackers were made on Thursday, injuring the <br>\nowner's two children.<\/p>\n<p>The police promised to crack down on all disturbances that <br>\ncould disrupt the Islamic holy month.<\/p>\n<p>But, a looming menace might come from radical groups as they <br>\nplan to conduct raids against entertainment centers that break <br>\nthe new rulings on closure during Ramadhan.<\/p>\n<p>The Islam Defenders Front maintained that it would target <br>\nentertainment centers that serve alcoholic drinks during <br>\nRamadhan, defying police warnings.<\/p>\n<p>In a maneuver to bolster security for foreigners in the <br>\ncapital, the police have pledged to increase the safeguarding of <br>\nforeign assets, which includes international schools.<\/p>",
