Police vow not to drop cases<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City Police Chief Maj. Gen. Dibyo Widodo gave
\nassurances yesterday that no criminal cases would be \"frozen\", as
\nmany have feared.<\/p>\n
Dibyo was responding to concerns that the long interval since
\npolice last made announcements regarding major investigations,
\nsuch as the triple murder in Los Angeles, the Danasonic chain
\nsavings scheme and the assault of a businessman by thugs
\nallegedly hired by a private bank, indicated that the police
\nmeant to drop their enquiries.<\/p>\n
\"Very often, the police need extra time to investigate
\ncomplicated cases,\" Dibyo said. \"We have no intention of freezing
\nany investigation.\"<\/p>\n
Among dossiers that the police will be handing over to the
\nprosecutors' office is that regarding a beating of a business
\nman, reportedly in connection with a loan dispute with the Panin
\nBank, Dibyo said.<\/p>\n
He said the dossiers on Harnoko Dewantono, alias Oki, 30, who
\nis suspected of killing two Indonesians and an Indian in Los
\nAngeles, were almost complete and ready to be transferred to the
\nprosecutors' office.<\/p>\n
\"We don't need any further witnesses or evidence,\" Dibyo said.<\/p>\n
Oki was recently sentenced to four years imprisonment for
\npassport forgery and is serving his term in Cipinang prison.<\/p>\n
Dibyo said that police had almost completed their work in
\nbringing to court executives of Jakarta-based PT Saptamitra
\nEkakarya, owner of the controversial Danasonic chain savings
\nscheme.<\/p>\n
\"So, it's just a matter of time,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Police believe the firm cheated thousands of people and earned
\nbillions of rupiah in an illegal business.<\/p>\n
Amid growing public concern, city police closed down the
\noperation of the Danasonic arisan savings chain scheme in April,
\nafter three years of operation.<\/p>\n
The firm's executives, an elderly couple identified as Sindi
\nHusain and his wife Anneke Kolondam, respectively commissioner
\nand president of the firm, were arrested early this month on
\nsuspicion of fraud and forgery.<\/p>\n
Within days of the arrest, Dibyo promised that the dossiers on
\nthe two suspects would be handed over to the prosecutors' office
\nfor trial.<\/p>\n
City police spokesman Lt. Col. Bambang Permantoro said
\nyesterday that the Danasonic officials' dossiers were currently
\nbeing studied by the prosecutors.<\/p>\n
\"We'll be informed when they (the prosecutors) have finished
\nwith the dossiers,\" Bambang said.<\/p>\n
Asked about progress in the case of a businessman who claims
\nto have been kidnapped and beaten by hired thugs, Dibyo said
\nthat, in that matter also, police would soon forward the dossiers
\nto the prosecutors for trial.<\/p>\n
He refused, however, to give further details, saying that
\npolice investigators were still studying all available data.<\/p>\n
Businessman Sulaiman Iskandar Ramli, better known as Han Seng,
\nreported to the police last month that he had been kidnapped and
\nbeaten by a group of 40 people hired by the Panin Bank in
\nrelation to a loan of Rp 3.6 billion (US$1.6 million) he received
\nfrom the bank in 1990.<\/p>\n
He claimed that the money had actually been borrowed by an
\nacquaintance of his who worked at the bank, who had later handed
