Police urged to reveal other Ecstasy cases<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The House of Representatives wants police to
\nhave success in Ecstasy-related cases after bringing suspect
\nZarina home from her hideout in Houston, U.S.<\/p>\n
Abu Hasan Sazili, deputy chairman of the Commission I of the
\nHouse, said Zarina's return from Houston to Jakarta on Sunday
\nrelieved everyone.<\/p>\n
Police should work harder to reveal other Ecstasy-related
\ncases, he said.<\/p>\n
Commission I deals with, among other things, foreign affairs,
\ninformation, and defense and security matters.<\/p>\n
Zarina, 24, escaped from Tangerang detectives on Aug. 8 after
\npolice found 29,677 Ecstasy pills in her house the day before.<\/p>\n
\"Now that Zarina is re-arrested, police need to make an inter-
\nsectoral probe into all Ecstasy-related cases. I believe that all
\nIndonesian people want that,\" Abu Hasan said.<\/p>\n
He said National Police Chief Lt. Gen. Dibyo Widodo had
\npromised to probe Ecstasy distribution networks.<\/p>\n
\"Let's support the police, by giving them information about
\nEcstasy-related cases. Input from the people will be useful to
\npolice in their operation,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Abu Hasan, who is of the ruling Golkar faction, told Antara
\nyesterday it was possible for Indonesian police to cooperate with
\nother countries' police when dealing with Ecstasy cases.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia has ratified the United Nations' convention on
\npsychotropics. This means we can cooperate with police and other
\ninstitutions from other countries,\" he said.<\/p>\n
As Ecstasy is very dangerous it is imperative that the
\ngovernment is determined to eliminate its abuse, he said.<\/p>\n
\"Ecstasy abuse has become a serious topic discussed at
\ninternational meetings, including the International Parliament
\nUnion,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Speaking of legal consequences Zarina faces, Abu Hasan said
\nZarina must be no exception in law. \"As an Indonesian citizen
\nZarina must be treated like other offenders,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Public comments<\/p>\n
In a related development, people said they expected Zarina's
\nrearrest would reveal a bigger Ecstasy network in the country.<\/p>\n
Asep Kurniawan, a student of the University of Indonesia, told
\nAntara Zarina might have cooperated with local and international
\nEcstasy syndicates. \"We hope the court can reveal many things in
\nher (Zarina's) trial\".<\/p>\n
Asep, who majors in public health, expected the case would be
\nhandled according to legal procedures. Those found guilty
\ndeserved punishment, who ever they were, he said.<\/p>\n
\"We'd like to know if Zarina got assistant from certain people
\nto escape to Houston,\" he said.<\/p>\n
A resident of Cempaka Putih, Central Jakarta, Sanwani, shared
\nhis opinion, saying the law must be preserved in this case. \"This
\nis very important in our effort to curb drug businesses in the
\ncountry, and that includes Ecstasy,\" Sanwani said.<\/p>\n
National Police Chief Lt. Gen. Dibyo Widodo had earlier said
\nZarina might be member of an international syndicate.<\/p>\n
\"Police want to re-question the suspect to make everything
