        "content": "<p>Police urged to improve image<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The police force has to work hard to improve its<br>\nimage which has been tarnished by the conduct of individual<br>\npersonnel, a communication expert said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The expert, Bachtiar Aly, urged the police to improve its<br>\nreputation by publicizing success stories.<\/p>\n<p>\"The public's high expectations of the police will be<br>\nfulfilled if the police can prove they are competent,\" Bachtiar<br>\nsaid while addressing the 51st anniversary of the Police College.<\/p>\n<p>Bachtiar said the police had not yet satisfied the public's<br>\nexpectations for better \"mental attitudes\" and public service, he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>A lack of technical ability and responsiveness were key points<br>\nthat the police had not yet addressed, Bachtiar said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its discrepancies, the police's recent successful<br>\nraids on drug syndicates and vehicle-theft rings should get the<br>\nthumbs-up, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Police Chief Gen. Dibyo Widodo said the Police College had to<br>\ncooperate with local and foreign educational institutions to<br>\nimprove its professionalism.<\/p>\n<p>One hundred and fifty-seven officers were awarded bachelor<br>\ndegrees yesterday. Two officers failed the course. Thirty-two<br>\nfemale officers completed a three-year diploma program.<\/p>\n<p>Dibyo also awarded medals of honor to former college governors<br>\nand deans who served between 1946 and 1997.
