Police urged to improve image<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The police force has to work hard to improve its
\nimage which has been tarnished by the conduct of individual
\npersonnel, a communication expert said yesterday.<\/p>\n
The expert, Bachtiar Aly, urged the police to improve its
\nreputation by publicizing success stories.<\/p>\n
\"The public's high expectations of the police will be
\nfulfilled if the police can prove they are competent,\" Bachtiar
\nsaid while addressing the 51st anniversary of the Police College.<\/p>\n
Bachtiar said the police had not yet satisfied the public's
\nexpectations for better \"mental attitudes\" and public service, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
A lack of technical ability and responsiveness were key points
\nthat the police had not yet addressed, Bachtiar said.<\/p>\n
Despite its discrepancies, the police's recent successful
\nraids on drug syndicates and vehicle-theft rings should get the
\nthumbs-up, he said.<\/p>\n
Police Chief Gen. Dibyo Widodo said the Police College had to
\ncooperate with local and foreign educational institutions to
\nimprove its professionalism.<\/p>\n
One hundred and fifty-seven officers were awarded bachelor
\ndegrees yesterday. Two officers failed the course. Thirty-two
\nfemale officers completed a three-year diploma program.<\/p>\n
Dibyo also awarded medals of honor to former college governors
\nand deans who served between 1946 and 1997. (cst)<\/p>",
