Police to tighten security prior to upcoming holiday<\/p>\n

Authorities are planning to enhance overall security across the
\ncountry for the upcoming Idul Fitri, Christmas and New Year
\nholiday season, particularly neighborhood security.<\/p>\n
National Police chief Da'i Bachtiar said Wednesday police
\nwould give special attention to security at a local level.<\/p>\n
\"We will increase the deployment of police personnel in each
\ndistrict, sub-district and neighborhood, especially in Jakarta,
\nduring the mudik, the season when most urban people go back to
\ntheir hometown, Christmas and New Year,\" said Da'i.<\/p>\n
However, he did not specify the number of personnel to be
\ndeployed.<\/p>\n
Millions of people are expected to return to their hometowns
\nto celebrate Idul Fitri, Christmas and New Year in the coming two
\nmonths.<\/p>\n
Da'i added that the plan is different from the one executed
\nlast year, in that not too many personnel will patrol the
\nstreets.<\/p>\n
Last year, the authorities deployed 120,000 police personnel,
\nmostly to patrol the streets in anticipation of possible
\nterrorist attacks and other security disturbances.<\/p>\n
Echoing Da'i's statement, the Coordinator Minister of Security
\nand Political affairs Bambang Yudhoyono said that the coming two
\nmonths were extremely volatile, in terms of the possibility of
\nanother terrorist attack.<\/p>\n
The police are currently conducting a massive manhunt for
\nterror suspects wanted in connection with recent bombings.<\/p>\n
The National Police Spokesperson Zainuri Lubis stated that the
\ntwo most wanted fugitives, Azahari bin Husin and Noordin Moch Top
\n-- both suspects of the Bali and Marriott bombings -- would not
\nbe able to get too far away from Bandung.<\/p>\n
\"There is a great possibility that these two suspects are not
\nfar from the Bandung area. I acknowledge that they may have
\nalready reached Central Java or even Sumatra -- if they managed
\nto travel by car or bus -- but no further away than those areas,\"
\nsaid Lubis.<\/p>\n
Da'i acknowledged that the plan would require the cooperation
\nof other government ministries, including the transportation and
\ntelecommunications ministry.<\/p>\n
\"We call for the increase of (police) land, sea and air
\ntransportation, as well as the communications ability of the
\npolice personnel,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Da'i mentioned budget difficulties, hoping that this
\nconstraint would not hamper security efforts.<\/p>\n
\"We hope that we can get the money as soon as possible. We
\ndon't want the money to reach us after we have finished the
\nprogram,\" said Da'i.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile at least 3,000 police personnel in Cirebon -- the
\ncity where both Tohir and Ismail were nabbed by the police --
\nhave been deployed to help hunt the fugitives and guard vital and
\nstrategic places along the West Java North coast.<\/p>\n
The operation is also aimed at securing hotels, amusement
\ncenters and other places frequented by expatriates in Cirebon.<\/p>\n
\"Besides which, we will conduct spot-checks of public
\ntransport,\" said the City Police chief Sr. Comr Sunaryono.<\/p>\n
He also said that the police were patrolling the border
\nbetween West Java and Central Java to stop the fugitives from
\ncrossing it.<\/p>",
