Police to take stern action on student brawls<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta Police Chief Maj. Gen. Hamami Nata
\nordered his subordinates yesterday to take stern action against
\nstudent brawls which were becoming more violent.<\/p>\n
"I have not yet received the latest reports on the brawls, but
\nI have asked all officers at the police precincts to give extra
\nattention to the brawls," Hamami said.<\/p>\n
He said the South Jakarta Police Precinct had set up a program
\ncalled Pelajar Siaga (Student Alert) to prevent student brawls.
\nStudents were trained to protect their neighborhoods in the two-
\nweek course.<\/p>\n
"The program, held twice this year in South Jakarta, seemed to
\nwork. We plan to extend the program to other precincts," he said.<\/p>\n
Hamami agreed with observers that student brawls had become
\ncrimes to some extent.<\/p>\n
This week there has been a bus hijacking and students robbing
\nother students on buses.<\/p>\n
On Monday, students from a Central Jakarta technical high
\nschool stopped a bus on Jl. Kramat Raya and threatened students
\non the bus with knives and demanded their wallets. Some had
\nsticks and belts with bicycle cogs attached to the buckles.<\/p>\n
The attackers escaped when the bus reached the Kampung Melayu
\nbus terminal, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The next day dozens of a senior high school students attacked
\nthree students from a state senior high school and stole their
\nwallets. They cut their victim's hands and forced them off the
\nbus.<\/p>\n
The three students, identified as Didi, Andi, and Yanto,
\nreported the incident to police.<\/p>\n
A similar incident occurred Wednesday when students from a
\nprivate senior high school attacked students from a state senior
\nhigh school in a bus on Jl. Salemba, Central Jakarta. They
\nthreatened them with knives and demanded their wallets. The
\nattackers escaped at the Kampung Melayu bus terminal.<\/p>\n
At least 15 students have been killed in city brawls this
\nyear. Most of the killers have not been caught.<\/p>\n
Yesterday, many students from a Kelapa Gading private senior
\ntechnical high school were involved in a brawl with students from
\nanother senior high school on Jl. Martadinata, North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The technical high school students threw stones at their
\nrivals in a bus which smashed several of the bus' windows. They
\nescaped when police tried to disperse them.<\/p>\n
Police caught five students from the technical senior high
\nschool who fell in a swamp beside the Hotel Wisata. No one was
