Police to summon Nirwan over bank deal<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): Police will summon Nirwan Bakrie, chairman of the
\nwidely diversified Bakrie Group, for questioning in relation to
\nan ongoing investigation of a Rp 900 billion scam at Bank
\nPerniagaan, an official said Saturday.<\/p>\n
Deputy chief of the city police detectives' unit, Lt. Col.
\nBakat Purwanto, said after a cadet school graduation at Lido,
\nBogor, that besides Nirwan, police were also planning to summon
\nfour other people in connection with the case.<\/p>\n
"Just wait for the report." he said.<\/p>\n
"As for Nirwan, the police only want to clarify his role, as
\nhe was said to have bought a great deal of Bank Perniagaan
\nshares," Bakat said.<\/p>\n
Nirwan reportedly bought Bank Perniagaan shares worth billions
\nof rupiah some time ago, the officer said.<\/p>\n
Bakat would not name the four other people to be summoned and
\ngave no dates for when Nirwan and the others would be questioned.<\/p>\n
Last year's scam has become more intriguing following the
\nquestionable death of the bank's former commissioner Hindoro
\nHalim on June 15.<\/p>\n
Hindoro, who reportedly fell to his death from his eighth-
\nfloor room at Hotel Marbela, Anyer, West Jakarta, was allegedly
\ninvolved in the scam.<\/p>\n
His death then sparked controversy because as the media tried
\nto learn the truth about his death, Hindoro's family refused to
\ntalk to reporters.<\/p>\n
Police said Friday that they would continue the investigation
\nof the bank swindle despite Hindoro's death.<\/p>\n
"Adityo Halim (Hindoro's brother) has now officially become a
\nsuspect in the bank scam as there is strong evidence which points
\nto his involvement," Bakat said.<\/p>\n
Nirwan was quoted by a local daily as having denied his
\ninvolvement in the case.<\/p>\n
"I think there are some parties who want to put me in a
\ncorner. They create images as if I was involved in the bank
\nscam," he said.<\/p>\n
City Police chief Maj. Gen. Noegroho Djajoesman, in Lido on
\nSaturday, asked the media not to put Nirwan in a difficult
\nsituation.<\/p>\n
"You have to respect his rights, too. We just need him for
\nquestioning.<\/p>\n
"Remember, he is innocent until proven guilty," Noegroho said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Hindoro was finally buried Saturday, at Gunung
\nSindur Cemetery, Bogor, after his family postponed the funeral
\nseveral times.<\/p>\n
The funeral was held amid tight security from the family's
\nbodyguards, with journalists banned from attending the funeral.<\/p>\n
His body was taken from Atmajaya Funeral Home in North Jakarta
\nand buried at 10 a.m., with only his closest relatives present.
