Gen. Dibyo Widodo, confirmed<br>\nyesterday that student brawls are increasing in both frequency<br>\nand brutality.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The number of deaths in student brawls has increased,&quot; he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Reports show that at least five students were stabbed to death<br>\nduring student brawls, which occurred in various districts over<br>\nthe past two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Chief of the South Jakarta Police District, Lt. Col. Sy.<br>\nWenas, said that police try to visit schools regularly,<br>\nespecially those whose students are often involved in brawls.<\/p>\n<p>A police source said the meeting will also discuss issues<br>\nwhich might cause brawls, such as drug abuse by students and the<br>\nviolation of social taboos, known as SARA -- the incitement of<br>\nracial, religious, ethnic, and societal group sentiments -- of<br>\nwhich religious passions are regarded as particularly sensitive.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Bogor police prevented student brawls which<br>\nreportedly involved hundreds of students from various senior high<br>\nschools, and was believed to have been caused by religious<br>\nsentiments.<\/p>\n<p>The anger of the students, who planned to attack a Catholic<br>\nsenior high school in Sukabumi, was caused by a rumor that the<br>\nKoran, the holy book of Islam, had been defamed.
