Police to discuss student brawls<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police are holding a meeting today to discuss
\nthe question of how to handle student brawls, which are reported
\nto be getting worse.<\/p>\n
The meeting is being held at National Police Headquarters in
\nKebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Chief of Jakarta Police, Maj. Gen. Dibyo Widodo, confirmed
\nyesterday that student brawls are increasing in both frequency
\nand brutality.<\/p>\n
"The number of deaths in student brawls has increased," he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Reports show that at least five students were stabbed to death
\nduring student brawls, which occurred in various districts over
\nthe past two weeks.<\/p>\n
Chief of the South Jakarta Police District, Lt. Col. Sy.
\nWenas, said that police try to visit schools regularly,
\nespecially those whose students are often involved in brawls.<\/p>\n
A police source said the meeting will also discuss issues
\nwhich might cause brawls, such as drug abuse by students and the
\nviolation of social taboos, known as SARA -- the incitement of
\nracial, religious, ethnic, and societal group sentiments -- of
\nwhich religious passions are regarded as particularly sensitive.<\/p>\n
Last week, Bogor police prevented student brawls which
\nreportedly involved hundreds of students from various senior high
\nschools, and was believed to have been caused by religious
\nsentiments.<\/p>\n
The anger of the students, who planned to attack a Catholic
\nsenior high school in Sukabumi, was caused by a rumor that the
\nKoran, the holy book of Islam, had been defamed. The rumor was
\nlater proved to be untrue. (01)<\/p>",
