Police to close unregistered clinics<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): East Jakarta Police will close down nine
\nunregistered maternity clinics operating illegally in the area,
\nan officer said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Police detectives chief Capt. Agus Irianto told reporters that
\nthe nine clinics were under the management of Herida Simamora who
\nis also a midwife at the clinic. The clinic is located on Jl.
\nFlamboyan in Duren Sawit district.<\/p>\n
Agus said he had received reports on Monday from Edwin Rauf,
\nhead of the East Jakarta office of the Health Ministry that the
\nnine clinics had no licenses and that Herida had not renewed her
\nlicense, which was last issued on Sept. 25, 1990.<\/p>\n
\"Herida had failed to renew her license every five years and
\nto register the nine Ananda maternity clinics with the East
\nJakarta office of the Health Ministry,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Erwin stated that his office had repeatedly asked Herida to
\ncomplete the process for the license, going as far back as July
\n27, 1998.<\/p>\n
\"Instead of complying with the requirements, she ignored the
\nwarnings,\" he said, adding that Herida had violated Law No.
\n23\/1992 on Health.<\/p>\n
Agus said local health centers had received complaints from
\nresidents in the locations where the maternity clinics were
\noperating. They said that young women were either dying or
\nbecoming more ill after receiving treatment at each of the nine
\nclinics.<\/p>\n
\"Our data shows that two women died after being treated at a
\nclinic on Jl. Flamboyan,\" he said, while identifying the victims
\nas 26-year-old Herlina and 19-year-old Muniroh, both were
\nresidents of Cakung Barat subdistrict.<\/p>\n
\"We suspect inappropriate treatment was given to both
\nvictims,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Agus speculated that the maternity clinics were in poor
\ncondition and were not properly equipped.<\/p>\n
\"We will question Herida and continue our investigation and
\nfind out whether she was ever implicated in malpractice cases in
\nthe past,\" Agus said. (06)<\/p>",
