Police to check Hambali's identity<\/p>\n
STABAT, North Sumatra: Police chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar said he
\nwould soon check the citizenship of Hambali, the alleged terror
\nsuspect.<\/p>\n
Da'i made the statement after inaugurating a police station in
\nLangkat district on Sunday.<\/p>\n
A Thai official has claimed that Hambali had actually acquired
\nSpanish nationality.<\/p>\n
Riduan Isamuddin alias Hambali was arrested in an apartment
\nbuilding in the ancient Thai temple city of Ayutthaya last week.<\/p>\n
He is reportedly being held in US government custody for
\nfurther questioning.<\/p>\n
Da'i further said he would also meet US Ambassador to
\nIndonesia Ralph Boyce to discuss Hambali's arrest and custody.<\/p>\n
\"We will push for him to be questioned in Indonesia. But we
\nhave yet to know what his nationality is; whether the document he
\nuses is official or fake,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Hambali is wanted by several countries over his alleged
\ninvolvement in bomb attacks, including in Indonesia, the United
\nStates, and the Philippines.<\/p>\n
The US government has accused Hambali of being the operational
\nchief of the so-called Jamaah Islamiyah (JI), a group allegedly
\nlinked to al-Qaeda.<\/p>\n
He has also been blamed for the Oct. 12, 2002 bomb blasts in
\nBali, which killed more than 200 people and injured over 300
