Police suspect suicide bombers behind blast<\/p>\n

As families buried their loved ones, and while vigils and
\nprotests expressed people's sorrow and anger, police were trying
\nto verify their suspicions that two suicide bombers were behind
\nThursday's attack outside the Australian Embassy that left nine
\npeople dead and over 180 injured.<\/p>\n
National Police chief of detectives Comr. Gen. Suyitno Landung
\nSudjono said the police were still examining body parts that had
\nbeen sent to the Police Hospital in East Jakarta, which he
\nbelieved belonged to the perpetrators of the bombing.<\/p>\n
\"We suspect they are not victims ... because we believe they
\nwere inside a truck they were using to carry out the attack when
\nthe bomb exploded,\" Suyitno said.<\/p>\n
He said the police had earlier believed the body parts
\nbelonged to three people suspected of conducting the attack. But
\nafter examining the body parts in the hospital, the police
\nidentified another victim of the blast as Suryatno. His family
\nhas claimed the body parts for burial, Suyitno said without
\nelaborating.<\/p>\n
He added that his officers were now matching the DNA of the
\ntwo bodies, with members of their families, who reside in an
\nundisclosed town in East Java.<\/p>\n
Journalists were shown a photograph taken from a video tape
\nmade by a camera placed outside the embassy in which a silver box
\nvan is traveling along Jl. H.R. Rasuna Said toward Menteng.
\nSuyitno said the camera also showed the truck make a U-turn in
\nfront of the Kuningan Plaza office building. It stopped in front
\nof the embassy, where a police truck was parked. However, this
\npicture was not shown to the press.<\/p>\n
\"Within seconds, the van blew up,\" Suyitno said.<\/p>\n
The camera recoded the van stopping at 10:34 a.m., according
\nto Suyitno.<\/p>\n
Suyitno said he suspected the perpetrators of the bombing were
\nlinked to fugitive Malaysian bomb makers Azahari bin Husin and
\nNoordin Moh. Top, who are believed to have also masterminded the
\nBali bombings in 2002 and the attack on JW Marriott Hotel in
\nJakarta in 2003.<\/p>\n
\"The terror suspects we have detained have told us there were
\nthree new recruits of Jamaah Islamiyah who were ready to conduct
\nsuicide bombings against particular targets. We suspect that some
\nof the body parts we found at the scene belong to them,\" Suyitno
\nadded.<\/p>\n
The police arrested five suspects in Sukaharjo, Surakarta, and
\nCentral Jakarta in April who were allegedly involved in planning
\nand preparing the Bali and the Marriott bombings.<\/p>\n
The police said one of the five people who was identified only
\nby his initials, US, was a citizen of a neighboring country. The
\nremaining suspects were identified as AD, BA, UM and FH. All of
\nthem, together with Saiffudin alias Abu Fida, and three other
\nsuspects who were arrested recently, would be of assistance in
\nhelping the police capture Azahari and Noordin.<\/p>\n
\"When we tried to catch them, three of the suspects managed to
\nescape. The three are all the suicide bombers recruited by
\nAzahari and Noordin, and they have been in frequent contact with
\none another,\" said Suyitno.<\/p>\n
The police have also concluded that the bomb was made of TNT
\nand sulfur.<\/p>\n
Australian forensic experts said the car bomb consisted of
\nabout 200 kilograms of potassium chloride.<\/p>\n
On Friday, people continued to expressed condolences to the
\nvictims and condemn the terror attack on television and radio.<\/p>\n
Exhortations to fight against terrorism were also voiced in
\nsermons at mosques during Friday prayers.<\/p>\n
\"We deplore anyone who commits such inhuman acts. We hope
\nthere will be no more tragedies like this, and that those who
\nperpetrated it realize they have betrayed the teachings of their
\nreligion,\" said the imam at the Dharmala Building on Jl.
\nSudirman.<\/p>\n
In Denpasar, dozens of people gathered to denounce the attack.<\/p>\n
They assembled in front of the memorial to the 202 people who
\nperished in the Oct. 12, 2002, bombings.<\/p>\n
\"The National Police chief must resign,\" one protester
\nshouted.<\/p>\n
In Bandung, representatives of student, farmers, and street
\nsingers' organizations demonstrated in front of the legislative
\nbuilding to condemn the bombing. A similar rally was also held by
\nreligious leaders, politicians and journalists in Cirebon.<\/p>\n
\"No religion can justify bombings. So, I call on the nation to
\nunite to face the threat,\" said Muslim cleric Adib Rofi'uddin.<\/p>",
