Police summon legislators<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police are expanding the investigation of former
\nlegislator Sri Bintang Pamungkas and planning to summon four
\nlegislators to testify on Monday.<\/p>\n
Bintang is accused of insulting President Soeharto and
\nslandering the government in a series of anti-Indonesian
\ngovernment demonstrations and seminars in Germany in April.<\/p>\n
The demonstrations, spearheaded by European non-governmental
\norganizations, were held during President Soeharto' state visit
\nin Germany. The legislators were members of the President's
\nentourage.<\/p>\n
The House members to be summoned are Muhammad Mansyur, Tengku
\nGazali Amna, both from the United Development Party (PPP);
\nMarkus Wauran from the Indonesian Democratic (PDI), and Haris Ali
\nMoerfi from the ruling Golkar functional group, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
\"I received the letter (from the police) today,\" Muhammad
\nMansyur told reporters.<\/p>\n
Apart from the four, there were six other legislators in the
\nPresident's group, namely Suratman, Alief Meliana -- both from
\nthe Armed Forces, Fachrudin, Wazaraka, Muhammad Muas from Golkar,
\nand Laksmiari Priyonggo from PDI.<\/p>\n
Mansyur said he is yet to obtain President Soeharto's written
\napproval to testify, as required by law.<\/p>\n
He said that he met Bintang at the Indonesian stand in the
\nHannover Fair '95 but that he did not know anything about
\ndemonstrations. He said he learned about the protests from staff
\nat the Indonesian Embassy in Germany, who saw them on television.<\/p>\n
