Police still working on Busang case<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): National Police Chief Lt. Gen. Dibyo Widodo said
\nyesterday a preliminary investigation team on the Busang hoax
\ncase was still collecting information from all possible sources.<\/p>\n
Dibyo said police would pursue the case thoroughly as it had
\nreceived full authorization from the Minister of Mines and Energy
\nI.B. Sudjana.<\/p>\n
The police are working with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police
\nas the mining company blamed for the scam, Bre-X Minerals Ltd.,
\nis based in Toronto.<\/p>\n
\"Whoever is proven to be involved in the trickery will be
\npunished,\" Dibyo said.<\/p>\n
Dibyo said the team was still collecting information and
\nevidence from the ministry.<\/p>\n
Police said the preliminary investigation team is authorized
\nto collect data and evidence. If a person thought to be involved
\nin the scandal wanted to leave the country, police would not be
\nable to prevent him, a source said, until he was named a suspect
\nor witness.<\/p>\n
A member of Bre-X's geological team has returned to the
\nPhilippines. It was headed by the late Michael de Guzman.<\/p>\n
The preliminary investigation team of detectives and experts
\nwas set up last week after a letter was issued by the minister.<\/p>\n
The team is led by Col. Arifin Rachim, head detective of the
\nSubdirectorate for Economic Affairs at the National Police.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday National Police Spokesman Brig. Gen. Nurfaizi
\ndenied statements that police have questioned officials of the
\nMinistry of Mining and Energy.<\/p>\n
\"Police have not summoned and questioned any official from the
\nministry in this preliminary investigation,\" Nurfaizi said.<\/p>\n
Ministry sources said several officials had been questioned by
\npolice.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday Antara quoted Head of the Directorate of General
\nMining, Adjat Sudrajat, as saying that the ministry had not
\nreceived any request from the police to question its employees.<\/p>\n
Adjat said by Monday, police had not issued the names of
\nofficials to be questioned regarding the Bre-X case.<\/p>\n
\"We don't know yet whether there is any official or former
\nofficial of the ministry who will be questioned by police,\" Adjat
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Officers at the National Police Headquarters said
\ninvestigations had not found any new clues and that no indication
\nof crime had been found so far.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Head of the National Police Detective
\nDepartment Brig. Gen. Rusdihardjo said Tuesday police would not
\nrelease any information on the Busang case until the preliminary
