Police still investigating Blok M firecracker blast<\/p>\n
BOGOR, West Java (JP): Police have not yet identified the
\nculprit in the firecracker explosion at a bus terminal near the
\nBlok M Shopping Mall in South Jakarta on Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n
A security guard was injured in the blast.<\/p>\n
"We have yet to identify the culprit or culprits behind the
\nincident. Nor have we been able to uncover the motive," Deputy to
\nthe National Police chief for Operational Affairs Maj. Gen.
\nKoesparmono Irsan told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Speaking in English, Koesparmono said he suspected the
\nfireworks "were meant to attract public attention" in the run-up
\nto the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference.<\/p>\n
"It could also be a joke. We should not worry too much about
\nit," the two-star general said shortly after inspecting police
\npersonnel security preparations for the 18-country economic
\nmeeting with National Police Chief Gen. Banurusman.<\/p>\n
So far, no one has been arrested in connection with the
\nexplosion.<\/p>\n
The injured security guard, identified as Lukito, and two
\ncleaning-service men have been questioned.<\/p>\n
Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the cleaning-
\nservice men found a package on the ground floor of the bus
\nterminal in the early hours of Wednesday. He and the other
\njanitor reported the find and handed the package over to Lukito
\nwho was on duty at a nearby security post.<\/p>\n
Maj. Gen. Koesparmono said when Lukito was handed the package
\n"he thought it was just a radio". He did not notice the
\nfirecrackers it was attached to, so he took the batteries from
\nhis walkie talkie and inserted them into it, the police officer
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
That is when the explosion occurred.<\/p>\n
After the explosion the security officer was taken to the
\nhospital where he received several stitches. He was sent home the
\nnext day.<\/p>\n
"We're still checking into possible motives and trying to
\ndetermine who did it," Koesparmono added. (bsr)<\/p>",
