Police start investigating Rachman's corruption case<\/p>\n

Police started questioning on Thursday members of the Public
\nServant's Wealth Audit Commission (KPKPN) as witnesses in an
\ninquiry into allegations of corruption involving Attorney General
\nM. A. Rachman.<\/p>\n
Their questioning is the first visible sign that police are
\nfinally investigating Rachman's corruption case reported by KPKPN
\nin December.<\/p>\n
KPKPN members summoned by police as witnesses on Thursday
\nincluded Rudjuan Dartono, who led KPKPN's audit team that
\nexamined Rachman's wealth and assets report, Soekotjo Soeparto,
\nLili Asdjudiredja, Winarno Zein, and Petrus Selestinus.<\/p>\n
Soekotjo said the police summons was actually addressed to
\nKPKPN chairman Yusuf Syakir, but Yusuf asked the audit team to
\nanswer the summons.<\/p>\n
He said the questioning session was aimed at following up
\nKPKPN's report that Rachman had concealed some of his assets in
\nhis wealth report.<\/p>\n
"Our report has become the initial evidence for the police to
\ndisclose the truth over Rachman's wealth report," he said.<\/p>\n
"Now the police have started to develop Rachman's case, and
\nwe're glad about it."<\/p>\n
According to him, police raised 23 of 40 planned questions for
\nRudjuan, while other KPKPN members only accompanied Rudjuan.<\/p>\n
"The remainder of the questions will be asked tomorrow
\n(Friday)," he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Petrus said KPKPN brought a number of documents as
\nevidence to police during questioning.<\/p>\n
The evidence included Rachman's wealth report, testimonies
\nfrom former staff of the Attorney General's Office Kito Irkhami,
\nNajib Attamimi, Husein Tanoto and Suryo Tanoto, he said.<\/p>\n
Expert testimony by Afrizal was also presented to police,
\nPetrus said.<\/p>\n
KPKPN reported Rachman to the police in December last year
\nafter the commission found discrepancies between Rachman's wealth
\nreport and its field inquiry.<\/p>\n
Rachman, for example, did not list in his wealth report a
\nluxury house worth around Rp 5 billion located at Jl. Penida 10,
\nGraha Cinere housing complex in Limo district, Depok, West Java.<\/p>\n
The commission also found that the attorney general failed to
\nclarify the source of his bank deposits that totaled Rp 800
\nmillion.<\/p>\n
Public demands have grown for Rachman to relinquish his post,
\nbut he has always maintained his innocence.<\/p>\n
President Megawati Soekarnoputri, who has the authority to
\nappoint or remove an attorney general, has refused to dismiss
\nRachman, saying that firing him would not resolve the problem and
\nthat the case was politically motivated.<\/p>",
