Police skeptical about plan to hand over Tommy<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police were skeptical over the possibility that
\nformer President Soeharto's fugitive son Hutomo \"Tommy\" Mandala
\nPutra would surrender or that the Soeharto family would hand over
\nthe fugitive to police, the main suspect in a Supreme Court
\njustice's murder, an officer said on Sunday.<\/p>\n
\"Too much evidence indicates that Tommy was behind the murder.
\nSo, we are skeptical that he would surrender or his family would
\nhand him over,\" city police spokesman Sr. Comr. Anton Bachrul
\nAlam told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
He said that some suspects who had been arrested and confessed
\nto the murder of the Supreme Court Justice M. Syafiuddin
\nKartasasmita on July 26, were acting on orders from Tommy.<\/p>\n
\"Police will continue to track down Tommy although the family
\nhave promised to try to hand over the fugitive. So far, we have
\nyet to make any deal about the hand over plan,\" he said.<\/p>\n
City police chief Insp. Gen. Sofjan Jacoeb admitted on Friday
\nthat the Soeharto family had discussed Tommy's possible surrender
\nwith their team of lawyers.<\/p>\n
Tommy's lawyer Juan Felix Tampubolon revealed that the family
\nand the lawyers planned to discuss some technical aspects of the
\nplan to surrender Tommy.<\/p>\n
\"The family plan to hand over Tommy. We were assigned to
\narrange the technical aspects of the plan,\" Juan said.<\/p>\n
Tommy's eldest sister Siti Hardiyanti Rukmana, also known as
\nTutut, who was questioned by police last week, said that her
\nbrother planned to surrender and provide clarification.<\/p>\n
Tommy, according to Tutut, called her two days before the
\nquestioning, claiming that he knew nothing about the murder.<\/p>\n
Police have also questioned Tommy's wife Ardhia Pramesti
\nRegita and Tommy's other sisters, Siti Hediati Prabowo and Siti
\nHutami Endang Hadiningsih, over his whereabouts.<\/p>\n
Many believe the family know of Tommy's whereabouts although
\nthey deny it. Tommy reportedly met Tutut during her birthday on
\nJuly 7, this year.<\/p>\n
Some lawyers have stated that the police have the legal right
\nto arrest Tutut and the other members of the Soeharto family for
\nhiding Tommy because he is a fugitive.<\/p>\n
However, according to Article 221 (b) of the Criminal Code,
\nthe family could not be charged with harboring a suspect.<\/p>\n
Tommy is still at large since he disappeared in November last
\nyear after he was sentenced to 18 months in jail for corruption
\ninvolving the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) and his firm PT Goro
\nBatara Sakti.<\/p>\n
Last Tuesday the police detained Tommy's nephew Ari Haryo
\nWibowo or Ari Sigit for firearm possession. (jun)<\/p>",
