Police shoot robbery suspect<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A man accused of robbing a bus passenger was
\nshot dead at the Grogol bus terminal in West Jakarta early
\nyesterday morning.<\/p>\n
The victim, identified as Rusliandi Siregar of Jembatan Besi,
\nwas arrested by police while he and an accomplice were attempting
\nto get off a bus on Jl. Susilo, the head of the Tanjung Duren
\nSubprecinct, First Lt. Bambang Heru, said.<\/p>\n
The two men had stolen a gold ring, necklace and bracelet and
\na wristwatch from a female passenger.<\/p>\n
Rusliandi's alleged accomplice, identified as Ucok, fled.<\/p>\n
The officers took Rusliandi to Grogol bus terminal to help
\nthem find Ucok. But Rusliandi attacked the accompanying officers
\nand tried to flee. He was shot in the back after he ignored a
\nwarning shot, Bambang said.<\/p>\n
Police records showed that Rusliandi was a former convict, he
\nadded.<\/p>\n
Rusliandi's body was later taken to the Cipto Mangunkusumo
\nGeneral Hospital for an autopsy.<\/p>\n
The previous day police shot dead an alleged motorcycle thief
\nin the Bukit Duri district in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said the man,
\nSyaiful Bahri, had tried to attack the arresting police officer.<\/p>\n
\"He tried to stab the officer with a screwdriver. The officer
\navoided him and fired warning shots. But he kept attacking the
\nofficer. So the officer shot him in the chest,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Syaiful died on the way to hospital, he added.<\/p>\n
Syaiful had been on the police's wanted list for a series of
\nmotorcycle thefts in Jakarta, Aritonang said. He was believed to
\nbe part of a syndicate that had been stealing motorcycles in
\nJakarta and selling them in Sukabumi and Rangkas Bitung, West
\nJava.<\/p>\n
\"Officers have been looking for Syaiful and his accomplices
\nfor some time. We have identified Syaiful's accomplices,\"
\nAritonang said.<\/p>\n
Police had seized motorcycles sold in Rangkas Bitung and
\nSukabumi which matched the specifications of the stolen
\nmotorcycles, he said.<\/p>\n
Syaiful's arrest followed a phone call from a resident in
\nTebet Barat, South Jakarta, in the early hours of Thursday who
\nsaid someone was trying to steal his motorcycle.<\/p>\n
Aritonang praised the motorcycle owner's decision to call the
\npolice immediately rather than trying to stop the thief himself.
