Police shoot dead two 'Red Axe' members<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Two more members of the notorious 'Red Axe'
\nstreet gang were shot dead on Jl. Jend. Suprapto, Cempaka Putih
\ndistrict, Central Jakarta early morning on Saturday for robbing
\nbus passengers.<\/p>\n
City Police detectives chief for general crimes Tito Karnavian
\nsaid the suspects, identified as Ronald Sinaga, 19, and Robin
\nTunggal, 22, and their two accomplices robbed passengers on a bus
\nplying the Senen-Pulogadung route.<\/p>\n
Tito said the robbers, who swung their red axes at passengers
\nto frighten them, managed to grab two gold necklaces and a gold
\nbracelet from two female passengers.<\/p>\n
The victims shouted for help after the robbers jumped out of
\nthe bus.<\/p>\n
Police officers who happened to be in the area then chased the
\nmen. Police shot Ronald and Robin in the back after firing
\nwarning shots, Tito said.<\/p>\n
The suspects died on the way to the Cipto Mangunkusumo general
\nhospital.<\/p>\n
The two other robbers managed to escape.<\/p>\n
Police earlier this week shot dead three members of the gang
\nwhich usually operates around Senen Railway station in Central
\nJakarta. The three were gunned down for resisting an arrest.<\/p>\n
The police also arrested six other gang members in a raid on a
\nhouse on Jl. RE Martadinata, which was believed to have sheltered
\nthe robbers.<\/p>\n
Besides robbing bus passengers, the gang members armed with
\nred axes also rob motorists at traffic lights in the area.<\/p>\n
City Police chief of detectives Sr. Comr. Harry Montolalu had
\nearlier blamed the extensive media coverage for the increasing
\nred axe-armed robberies.<\/p>\n
\"Particularly the TV media has extensively covers this type of
\nrobbery. Red-axe robberies have become very popular lately and
\nrobbers find this to be another easy method to make money,\" Harry
\ntold reporters.<\/p>\n
He added the police had never found evidence that the robbers
\nwere of the same group.<\/p>\n
\"Red-axe robberies are most prominent in traffic light areas,
\nwhere they wait for motorists to stop during traffic, break open
\nthe car windows and seize cellphones mostly. I urge all city
\nresidents to report this kind of behavior to the nearest police
\nstation or to city police.\"<\/p>\n
He said the city police headquarters had ordered officers not
