Police shoot dead two men for resisting arrest<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City Police shot dead two street criminals in
\ntwo separate incidents for resisting arrest, raising the death
\ntoll of criminals shot by law enforcers to 26 this year.<\/p>\n
City Police spokesman Lt. Col. Zainuri Lubis said on Monday
\nthe two victims were identified as Syahrul, alias Aung, 28, and
\nHermansyah, alias Yayah, 26.<\/p>\n
Syahrul was shot in the head in West Jakarta late Saturday,
\nwhile Hermansyah was shot in the chest in South Jakarta on
\nSunday, Lubis said.<\/p>\n
He said Syahrul was believed to be a member of an armed
\nrobbery gang who targeted victims in Jembatan Lima area, Grogol,
\nWest Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"After being apprehended for a robbery, Syahrul was questioned
\nat a nearby police station. (The criminal) said he hid some of
\nthe stolen goods in Tambora area,\" Lubis said, without providing
\ndetails of the arrest.<\/p>\n
When asked to show the location of the stolen goods, Syahrul
\ntried to run away from the officers, Lubis said.<\/p>\n
\"As he ignored the warning shots, he was shot in the head and
\ndied instantly.\"<\/p>\n
Syahrul's body was taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo General
\nHospital for a postmortem examination.<\/p>\n
Separately in South Jakarta, Hermansyah was also shot while
\nresisting arrest and ignoring police warning shots.<\/p>\n
With an unidentified accomplice, Hermansyah robbed a passerby,
\nSyailendra Febriansyah, of his cellular phone.<\/p>\n
The cell phone was snatched from Syailendra's pocket as he
\nwalked on a pedestrian path near the Pasar Raya building complex
\nin Blok M at about 5:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
As soon as Syailendra realized he was robbed he rushed to a
\nnearby police station to report the incident, Lubis said.<\/p>\n
The two men were spotted at the incident site by patrolling
\npolice officers at about 9:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
\"They tried to run away when they saw the officers approaching
\nthem.\"<\/p>\n
As warning shots were ignored, the officers were forced to
\nshoot Hermansyah, Lubis said, adding that his accomplice managed
\nto disappear amid the crowd at the busy Blok M bus terminal.
