Police shoot and kill fleeing drug suspect<\/p>\n

Jakarta Police narcotics detectives shot dead a suspected drug
\ndealer, identified as Sutawijaya alias Yakob alias Pepen, on
\nThursday evening in the Lokasari entertainment center, Tangki
\nsubdistrict, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"We found 1,500 ecstasy pills and 450 grams of shabu-shabu
\n(crystal methamphetamine) on him,\" the chief of the city police's
\nnarcotics unit, Adj. Sr. Comr. Heru Mulyadi, told a press
\nbriefing on Friday.<\/p>\n
The street value of the drugs is estimated at around Rp 400
\nmillion (US$43,788).<\/p>\n
One ecstasy pill sells for between Rp 70,000 and Rp 100,000 in
\nJakarta, depending on supply and quality. Meanwhile, a gram of
\nshabu-shabu is sold for around Rp 600,000.<\/p>\n
Heru explained that the police arrested Sutawijaya at a house
\nnear Lokasari. It was in this house that they had found the
\necstasy pills and the shabu-shabu.<\/p>\n
He said his officers had been watching Sutawijaya for some
\ntime as he was well-known as a drug dealer in the area. Heru said
\nthat Sutawijaya was also involved in street crime, including
\npetty theft and muggings.<\/p>\n
After arresting Sutawijaya, the detectives decided to take him
\nto nearby Lokasari as bait to entrap some of his fellow drug
\ndealers.<\/p>\n
Heru said that on the way to Lokasari, Sutawijaya managed to
\nescape the police escort. An officer immediately fired a warning
\nshot, and then shot Sutawijaya in the back and his left leg as
\nfailed to stop.<\/p>\n
Sutawijaya died instantly and the police sent his body to the
\nCipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital morgue in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Tangki subdistrict, located near Jl. Mangga Besar and Jl.
\nHayam Wuruk, has become one of the city's best known drug
\ncenters. Drug transactions often occur in the entertainment spots
\non both streets and in the surrounding area.<\/p>",
