Police set to issue permit for La Toya performances<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): National Police deputy chief in charge of
\noperational affairs Maj. Gen. M.B. Hutagalung said yesterday that
\npolice would "most likely" grant a permit for performances in
\nIndonesia by American singer La Toya Jackson.<\/p>\n
Answering questions from reporters as to whether the police
\nwould issue a permit for the La Toya shows, Hutagalung said,
\n"Yes, most likely." But he added, that so far police have yet to
\nreceive the organizers' application for a permit of the shows.<\/p>\n
He said police have not received any objections from the
\nruling political group, Golkar, about the planned shows as well.<\/p>\n
La Toya Jackson is scheduled to perform in Jakarta on May 26,
\nBandung on May 27 and Surabaya on May 29. The performances are
\nbeing sponsored by Buena Produktama.<\/p>\n
La Toya's planned performances, however, are under threat of
\ncancellation after Golkar urged the police not to grant a permit
\nfor the performances on the grounds that her attitudes are at
\nodds with the local culture.<\/p>\n
Golkar's chairperson for the Culture and Art Department, Ais
\nAnantama Said, had asked police to reject the application for a
\npermit for performances by La Toya because her controversial
\nactions, including posing nude in Playboy magazine and publishing
\na wicked story about her family, were hard to accept in
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
Ais said that his decision was also based on the fact that La
\nToya, a sister of Michael and Janet Jackson, was not a singer of
\ninternational quality.<\/p>\n
Director of Buena Produktama, Peter Basuki, said that he had
\napplied for permits for La Toya's performances from the
\nEntertainment Evaluating Committee and City Police, adding that
\nboth had given the green light.<\/p>\n
He said that he would lose over Rp 120 million (US$56,000) if
\nLa Toya's performances in Indonesia were canceled.<\/p>\n
"Well, it is really difficult if politics is involved in show
\nbusiness," Basuki complained.<\/p>\n
In a related development, chairman of the Golkar faction at
\nthe House of Representatives, A. Moestahid, said yesterday that
\nthe Entertainment Evaluating Committee should be very selective
\nin permitting musical performances by foreign artists in
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
He concurred with Ais, saying that the American artist should
\nbe banned from performing in the country because her lifestyle is
