Police seize pirated CDs, nab alleged manufacturers<\/p>\n

The Jakarta Police confiscated 273,000 pirated video compact
\ndiscs (VCDs) and audio compact discs (CDs) from three locations
\nin Greater Jakarta over the weekend, police chief Insp. Gen.
\nFirman Gani revealed on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\"In subsequent raids, we also detained seven suspects of
\ncopyrights violations,\" he told a media conference.<\/p>\n
Detective top officer Sr. Comr. Mathius Salempang explained
\nthat the discs contained music and movies both from local and
\ninternational industries.<\/p>\n
The operation was based on complaints filed by the Recording
\nIndustry Association (ASIRI) and the Video Film Importers
\nAssociation (Asirevi) in July, suspecting distribution of pirated
\nVCDs, CDs, and DVDs, a violation to Law No. 19\/2002 on
\ncopyrights.<\/p>\n
The police investigation led them to a medium-scale CD
\nduplicating industry in Tangerang, where the police confiscated
\n12 machines, including machines to produce blank CDs and Digital
\nVersatile Discs (DVDs) from high grade polycarbonate or raw
\nplastic.<\/p>\n
The manufacturer allegedly belonged to PT Dimension Multi
\nDigital Star.<\/p>\n
The police arrested the company's director Ati Susanti, the
\nassistant to the director A Siung and company manager Jenvanter
\nSilalahi.<\/p>\n
Along with the machines, the police also seized 47,000 pirated
\nVCDs, CDs and DVDs, 11 tons of polycarbonate, a minivan and a
\ncomputer.<\/p>\n
In the next operation, the police raided PT Karya Guna Sukses
\nPratama, also in Tangerang, confiscated 3,000 pirated VCDs and
\nCDs, six duplicating machines, eight kilograms of polycarbonate
\nand a minivan.<\/p>\n
The police arrested its president director Slamet Wijoyo and
\ncommissioner Edy.<\/p>\n
The third raid was at a warehouse in Pademangan, North
\nJakarta, where the two companies stocked their production. From
\nthe warehouse police confiscated 223,000 pirated discs and a
\nminivan and detained two other people: Slamet Riyadi, a driver,
\nand Sularso, a packaging worker.<\/p>\n
The discs contained video clips of national musicians like
\nIwan Fals, Ebiet G. Ade, national movies, TV series, and Indian
\nmovies, the police revealed.<\/p>\n
Also attending the media conference, Arnel Affandi of ASIRI
\nsaid music piracy had caused a state loss of an estimated Rp 1.19
\ntrillion rupiah from the potential value-added tax in 2003 alone.<\/p>\n
\"Meanwhile, the national music industry suffered losses of an
\nestimated Rp 16 trillion in 2003 because of piracy,\" he added.<\/p>\n
He lauded the police for the operation, saying that this was
\nthe first time the police ever confiscated a DVD duplicating
\nmachine.<\/p>\n
Although there had been similar operations, the prosecution of
\nsuch case was mostly unheard by the public.<\/p>\n
\"Since early this year, we have detected that many of the
\npirated DVDs on sale in Indonesia were no longer imported,\" Arnel
\nsaid.<\/p>",
