Police seize biggest ganja haul of the year<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police arrested a university student from Aceh
\nprovince and seized 245 kilograms of marijuana -- the biggest
\nhaul this year -- in his possession on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The suspect was identified as Donny Wardana Waris, 29, a
\nresident of Saumeru subdistrict, Sukamakmur district in Aceh
\nBesar, Jakarta Police detective chief Col. Alex Bambang Riatmodjo
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Alex said two other suspects escaped. He declined to disclose
\ntheir identities because police needed to conduct further
\ninvestigation to identify the major dealers in the drug
\nsyndicate.<\/p>\n
\"They are probably reporting to their boss that their friend
\nis in custody now,\" Alex said.<\/p>\n
Sources close to the investigation said the two were
\nundercover police officers who have long been part of a marijuana
\nsyndicate.<\/p>\n
They said that Donny was unable to escape in the red Kijang
\nvan but his two accomplices managed to flee from police during
\nthe raid at 12 p.m. at Jembatan Genit in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Donny, a student of Abbul Yatama University, and the two
\nothers had arrived in the capital after driving from Aceh. They
\nstopped at Teluk Gong after they left Merak Port.<\/p>\n
Inside the van were four large sacks and three plastic bags
\ncontaining marijuana.<\/p>\n
\"Suddenly two cars passed us and cut us off,\" Donny said. \"I
\nthought we were about to be robbed because the men pulled out
\npistols and ordered us to get out of the van.\"<\/p>\n
He said he was told to accompany the two to Jakarta in the
\nvan, which belonged to a friend, but he did not know they were
\ncarrying drugs. \"I didn't know anything about the marijuana.\"<\/p>\n
The obviously confused Donny told reporters that police
\npressed him to disclose where the marijuana was headed.<\/p>\n
Alex said narcotics police have closely watched the
\ntrafficking of marijuana from Sumatra sent overland.<\/p>\n
Some groups have used couriers or bus companies, with others
\nsending the drug in private vehicles, Alex said.<\/p>\n
He said his officers made several trips to Aceh and
\nneighboring North Sumatra to trace routes of the traffickers.<\/p>\n
\"This raid is one of our attempts to cut the distribution by
\nblocking them when they're about to enter Jakarta,\" Alex said.<\/p>\n
\"If the Tangerang Police can confiscate 115. 5 kilograms, why
\ncan't we get more than that?\"<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, the Tangerang Military District Command seized
\n115.5 kilograms of marijuana, concealed in boxes of mangoes,
\nwhich arrived on a bus from Aceh.<\/p>\n
The military also arrested egg seller Munawar Abdul Aneuk, 32,
\na resident of Ciputat in Tangerang, who picked up the boxes.<\/p>\n
Officers were suspicious because the boxes seemed unusually
\nlight to be carrying mangoes.<\/p>\n
The evidence and the suspect have been handed over to the
\nTangerang Police for further investigation.(emf)<\/p>",
