Police seize 8,400 ecstasy pills<\/p>\n
National Police detectives have arrested the owner of a
\nclandestine drug laboratory which manufactured ecstasy pills by
\nthe thousand on Jl. KH. Hasyim Ashari No. 29, KM 1, Cipondoh,
\nTangerang.<\/p>\n
The suspect, whom police identified as Ang Kiem Soei alias
\nAnche Tahir alias Kim Ho, 31, was arrested on Sunday. Pursued by
\ndrug detectives since 1998, he is believed to hold both a Dutch
\npassport and an Indonesian identification card, which was
\nreportedly issued in Irian Jaya.<\/p>\n
Police seized about 8,400 ecstasy pills from the laboratory,
\nalong with illicit chemicals used in the making of the pills.<\/p>\n
National Police deputy spokesman Brig. Gen. Edward Aritonang
\nsaid in Jakarta on Monday that thousands of pills could be
\nproduced in a day, and the takings from their sale in nightclubs
\nand discos could reach hundreds of billions of rupiah per month.<\/p>\n
The laboratory, where Ang Kiem himself lived, had three main
\nrooms, which were all used to produce the pills.<\/p>\n
The materials seized from the laboratory included
\nMethylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), which is Ecstasy in powder
\nform before it is made into a capsule or pill. MDMA is a
\nsynthetic, psychoactive drug possessing stimulant and
\nhallucinogenic properties.<\/p>\n
MDMA's effects last approximately between four and six hours.
\nUsers of the drug say that it produces profoundly positive
\nfeelings, empathy for others, elimination of anxiety and extreme
\nrelaxation.<\/p>\n
MDMA is also said to suppress the need to eat, drink, or
\nsleep, enabling users to endure two- to three-day parties.<\/p>\n
Consequently, MDMA use sometimes resulted in severe
\ndehydration or exhaustion. It is most often distributed at late-
\nnight parties called \"raves,\" nightclubs and rock concerts. -- JP<\/p>",
