Police seize 25 vehicles from three auto theft gangs<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City police detectives have confiscated 25
\nstolen vehicles, mostly Kijang and Isuzu Panther vans and Feroza
\njeeps, in the last two weeks.<\/p>\n
Chief of the Jakarta Police detectives Col. Alex Bambang
\nRiatmodjo told reporters on Friday the vehicles were seized from
\nthree auto theft gangs.<\/p>\n
\"We've busted six members of the gangs, while the other five
\nare still at large.\"<\/p>\n
Police said each of the gangs had varying numbers of members.<\/p>\n
Alex identified the suspects as Wawan, Andi, Edi, Sumarno,
\nRudy and Surip.<\/p>\n
The first four are from one gang. Rudy was involved with three
\nothers, all of whom are still at large. Surip is also believed to
\nhave worked with two accomplices.<\/p>\n
The gangs used different techniques in the thefts, Alex said.<\/p>\n
\"Wawan's group, for example, applied the outdated modus
\noperandi of first observing the area in their own car to look for
\ntargets before stealing the people's vehicles using duplicate
\nignition keys.\"<\/p>\n
Wawan's gang members were all nabbed in the town of Cirebon in
\nWest Java. Police confiscated 13 cars, including a black BMW
\nsedan.<\/p>\n
Police considered Rudy's group violent because members often
\nwounded others during the theft.<\/p>\n
Alex said the gang focused its operation on rental company
\nvehicles. Pretending to be a businessman, Rudy hired cars for a
\none-day trip to Bogor or Bandung.<\/p>\n
On the way, Rudy would ask the driver to pull over at a
\nparticular location on the pretense that he wanted to pick up
\nfriends.<\/p>\n
\"Shortly after his friends were already inside the car, the
\ngroup pulled rope around the driver's neck, beat him and
\nabandoned him in a deserted area,\" Alex said.<\/p>\n
Rudy was arrested on Monday at his residence in Joglo, West
\nJakarta. From his house, which he also used illegally as a
\nshowroom, police confiscated five cars, all believed to be
\nstolen.<\/p>\n
Surip and his two gang members usually began their operations
\nby making inspections using two motorcycles.<\/p>\n
\"If they found the right cars, one of the group members then
\nstarted the operation by damaging the car's door lock and
\nstarting the engine by using fake keys,\" Alex said.<\/p>\n
\"For backup, the other members waited on alert on the other
\nmotorcycle to watch the situation.\"<\/p>\n
Surip was arrested on Monday in Bogor.<\/p>\n
From information he provided, police have been able to trace
\nthe whereabouts of seven Kijang vans, sold to a secondhand car
\ndealer in the Cibinong area.<\/p>\n
Alex recommended that people with recently missing vehicles
\nshould visit the city police headquarters on Jl. Sudirman in
\nSouth Jakarta. Seized vehicles are on display in one of the
\ncompound's parking lots.<\/p>\n
