Police release Yorrys as lawyer posts bail<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City Police Chief Maj. Gen. Mochammad Hindarto
\nannounced yesterday that Yorrys Raweyai of the Pemuda Pancasila
\nyouth organization has been released after his bail was paid by
\nhis lawyer.<\/p>\n
"It was done according to the law," Hindarto told The Jakarta
\nPost after attending an inter-departmental meeting on traffic law
\nat the National Police Headquarters yesterday.<\/p>\n
According to the two-star general, lawyer Hotma Sitompul paid
\nhis client's bail.<\/p>\n
By law, Hotma the sum will be forfeited if Yorrys fails to
\nshow up at the police station or court three months after being
\nsummoned.<\/p>\n
Yorrys is also suspected of plotting the murder of a servant
\nwho worked for one of the youth organization's executives, in
\nSeptember last year.<\/p>\n
In the meantime Yorrys is being tried at the West Jakarta
\ndistrict court on charges of gambling.<\/p>\n
If found guilty, the day-to-day chairman of the powerful youth
\norganization will face a maximum imprisonment of seven years for
\nhis role in torturing the 23-year-old servant to death.<\/p>\n
Many people have questioned the police's decision to allow
\nYorrys' release on bail after having interrogated him intensively
\na number of times. Because Yorrys was considered an "untouchable"
\nthey believe that there must be a powerful and influential figure
\nbehind the release.<\/p>\n
Other crimes<\/p>\n
Earlier, Hindarto revealed that his personnel were still
\ncollecting all available information and evidence in an effort to
\nlearn of Yorrys' alleged role in other crimes, including the
\nsmuggling of expensive alcoholic beverages.<\/p>\n
He also told reporters recently that a number of city
\ndetectives went to Singapore to investigate Yorrys' alleged role
\nin last year's murder of the notorious gambling operator Nyo Beng
\nSeng in Pluit.<\/p>\n
But a few days after making the statement Hindarto said that
\nthe detectives were only in Singapore to seek evidence in
\nconnection with the distribution of hundreds of fake Diners Club
\ncredit cards here.<\/p>\n
When asked by reporters during a break at the West Jakarta
\ncourt on Monday, Yorrys refused to give any explanation about his
\ncases, saying that his lawyer is handling them all. (bsr)<\/p>",
