Police ready holiday security<\/p>\n

The Jakarta Police will beef up security at churches and mosques
\nas well as public places ahead of the Christmas and New Year
\nholidays to protect the public.<\/p>\n
"The deployment will start a week before Christmas," city
\npolice spokesman Sr. Comr. Tjiptono said on Tuesday. "The number
\nof officers to be deployed in each church will be different,
\ndepending on the size of the congregation and the church."<\/p>\n
The police will discuss the arrangements with the security
\ndivision of the places of worship.<\/p>\n
Since the Christmas bombings at several churches in the
\ncapital and other cities in 2000, churches have paid serious
\nattention to security with some installing metal detectors.<\/p>\n
Tjiptono said there would be bomb specialists assigned at each
\nchurch. "The highest security concern is still bomb threats as
\nthe main suspects of several terrorist attacks are still at
\nlarge."<\/p>\n
Two main fugitives suspected of masterminding several major
\nblasts in the country -- Azahari and Noordin Moh. Top -- remain
\nat large.<\/p>\n
Recent attacks on two churches in Palu, Central Sulawesi, have
\nraised concerns among the public. President Susilo Bambang
\nYudhoyono has called on the police to beef up security for the
\ncoming holidays.<\/p>\n
Besides churches, the police will also tighten security at the
\ncity's major mosques such as Istiqlal Grand Mosque. "We don't
\nwant to leave out anything in our security system," Tjiptono
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
As for the New Year, the police are concentrating on traffic
\nalong major thoroughfares as many young people parade the streets
\nto celebrate on New Year's Eve.<\/p>\n
"We will also concentrate on recreation sites such as the
\nAncol Dreamland and the National Monument (Monas)," he added.<\/p>",
