Police raid starred Bukittinggi hotels<\/p>\n
PADANG, West Sumatra: Police launched a raid on four star-
\nrated hotels on Tuesday in the resort town of Bukittinggi, as
\nseveral guests were suspected of carrying drugs and sharp
\nweapons.<\/p>\n
The four raided hotels were the Novotel Coralia Hotel, Limas
\nHotel, Royal Denai Hotel and Pusako Hotel.<\/p>\n
Although the raid yielded neither contraband nor arms, police
\nsealed several rooms that had been found to be \"clean\".<\/p>\n
Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) chairman
\nAim Zein regretted the incident.<\/p>\n
\"They have violated the agreement between the PHRI and
\npolice,\" he said on Tuesday in Padang, capital of West Sumatra,
\nbut did not elaborate.<\/p>\n
He said the police operation could tarnish the image of
\nBukittinggi as a tourist destination, adding that they should
\nhave acted in accordance with the standing agreement between them
\nand hotel owners.<\/p>\n
Aim said the raiding police teams also demanded hotel guests
\nto produce their marriage certificates.<\/p>\n
\"They deviated from their purpose and caused discomfort (to
\nguests) that could threaten tourism here. Do people take their
\nmarriage certificates with them wherever they go?\" he said.<\/p>\n
A medical convention that was to be held on Tuesday at the
\nNovotel was canceled following the raid. -- JP<\/p>",
