Police question Tutut and Titiek on fugitive Tommy<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The police questioned two daughters of former
\npresident Soeharto in connection with the case of their brother,
\nHutomo \"Tommy\" Mandala Putra, who was still at large on Saturday
\nnight.<\/p>\n
Tommy is a suspect who allegedly masterminded a series of
\nbombings in the city and the murder of a Supreme Court Judge,
\nSyafiuddin Kartasasmita last month.<\/p>\n
Both of the daughters, Siti Hardiyanti Rukmana -- known as
\nTutut, and Siti Hediati Harijadi Prabowo -- known as Titiek, went
\nto Central Jakarta police station on Saturday morning as
\nwitnesses in the case of Hetty Siti Hartika, who is alleged to
\nhave helped Tommy in his criminal actions.<\/p>\n
Hetty, a manager of Cemara Apartments in the Menteng area, is
\ncurrently being detained at Central Jakarta police station for
\nhiding the fugitive Tommy from the police and illegal possession
\nof weapons. Cemara Apartments is reportedly owned by the Soeharto
\nfamily.<\/p>\n
Hetty is also alleged to have been involved in the murder of
\nJustice Syafiuddin, and the bombing campaigns that rocked the
\ncity during the last few months.<\/p>\n
Chief of Central Jakarta Police Mathius Salempang said that
\nthe questioning was focused on their relationship with Hetty.<\/p>\n
Mathius quoted Titiek as saying that she (Titiek) had met
\nHetty six years ago and they had become good friends since then.
\nWhenever Titiek needed somebody to accompany her, she only had to
\ncall Hetty.<\/p>\n
\"I knew her as a friend,\" Titiek, who wore a black jacket and
\nskirt, told reporters, adding that Hetty was not her relative.<\/p>\n
When asked about Hetty's involvement in Tommy's case, she
\nsaid, \"It is impossible that my brother has committed the
\ncriminal actions that have been cited by the police and the
\ngeneral public.\"<\/p>\n

Titiek asked the public not to be prejudiced against her
\nyoungest brother until he had clarified matters himself.<\/p>\n
During the questioning, which took about three hours, Titiek
\nanswer all the scheduled 30 questions, while Tutut could only
\nmanage to answer eight, since she was reportedly unwell.<\/p>\n
Tutut and Titiek were accompanied by their lawyers, Juan Felix
\nTampubolon, Nudirman Munir and Elza Syarif.<\/p>\n
Nudirman Munir at first denied that Tutut knew Hetty.<\/p>\n
However, when reporters told him about Titiek's statement that
\nshe and Tutut knew Hetty, he said that Tutut had known her for
\nabout three years but they had not had a close relationship.<\/p>\n
During the questioning, about 50 people held a demonstration
\noutside Central Jakarta police station.<\/p>\n
Calling themselves the Youth Front, they blamed Tommy for his
\nalleged actions, including the bombings and the murder of Judge
\nSyafiuddin Kartasasmita, and asked the police to investigate the
