Police question tribal leader<\/p>\n
MANOKWARI, Irian Jaya: Amungme tribal leader Tom Beanal has
\nbeen questioned about the Aug. 14 kidnapping of employees of a
\nlogging company, PT Kamundan Raya, in Timika subdistrict.<\/p>\n
Beanal, an activist of the Indonesian Environmental Forum, is
\nsuspected of masterminding the kidnapping, said Col. Frans Willem
\nde Wanna of the local military command.<\/p>\n
De Wanna was quoted by Antara yesterday as saying that Beanal
\nordered separatist rebels under Thadius Yogi to loot the
\ncompany's base camp and abduct the employees.<\/p>\n
\"We strongly believe he arranged the kidnapping,\" said De
\nWanna, who heads a team of soldiers in charge of tracking down
\nthe kidnappers. Nine of the 12 captives have been rescued.<\/p>\n
Beanal has denied knowing anything about the kidnapping. He
\nsaid he first heard of the incident from Radio Australia. (pan)<\/p>",
