Police question student leader<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The Central Jakarta Police questioned student
\nactivist Rico Marbun for over 10 hours on Thursday about his
\ninvolvement in an antigovernment rally last week during which a
\npolice officer was assaulted.<\/p>\n
Rico's lawyer, Ecoline Situmorang, said police charged his
\nclient with violating Article 214 of the Criminal Code for acts
\nagainst a law enforcer, which carries a maximum penalty of six
\nyears in jail.<\/p>\n
During last Thursday's rally near President Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri's official residence on Jl. Teuku Umar in Menteng,
\nCentral Jakarta, Rico, chairman of the Student Executive Board in
\nGreater Jakarta, picked up a riot officer and carried him around
\nin front of hundreds of student protesters. The move sparked
\nanger among other officers and almost resulted in a clash.<\/p>\n
Rico denied the charges, saying the students never intended to
\ntake the officer hostage. He said it was a peaceful rally to
\ndemand the government lower utility prices, arrest corrupt
\nbusinesspeople and stop the sale of state assets. -- JP<\/p>",
