Police in Sleman are investigating the discovery of 11 babies allegedly being cared for illegally at a midwife's family home in Pakem, questioning the midwife, her parents, and the babies' mothers to determine if crimes such as child neglect or trafficking are involved. The babies, mostly born out of wedlock, were entrusted to the midwife due to parents' busyness or unmarried status, with daily fees of Rp50,000 per child, though the childcare lacks proper licensing despite the midwife's practice being permitted. This case highlights potential vulnerabilities in informal childcare arrangements in Indonesia, prompting a thorough probe before any suspects are named.

Police officers are continuing their investigation and in-depth probe
into the case of alleged illegal baby care. Although no suspects have
been named yet, police have taken statements from several witnesses,
including the babies’ parents. Sleman Police Resort Criminal
Investigation Head, AKP Mateus Wiwit Kustiyadi, stated that a total of
11 people have been examined, including the midwife with initials ORP
who assisted in the births. Then there are the woman with initials K and
the man with initials S, who are the midwife’s parents. Examination
results show that both helped care for the babies along with a helper.
“We have clarified with one midwife, initials ORP. With the carer, Mrs
K, assisted by her husband, Mr S, and one helper,” Wiwit told reporters
on Monday (11/5/2026). In addition, police have taken statements from
six mothers who entrusted their children to the midwife. Wiwit said the
parents took the initiative to entrust their children. “The parents, due
to busyness or possibly unmarried status, temporarily entrusted them.
But they mostly cited busyness and plan to take them back,” he said.
Probing Criminal Acts Wiwit stated that officers are still deepening the
investigation into this incident. Whether there are indications of
neglect, child trafficking, or other criminal acts. Therefore, police
have not yet named any suspects in this incident. “Everything is still
under investigation. So it’s still investigative in nature, clarifying
them and deepening with witnesses, both at the scene and those involved
in caring or with the midwife,” he emphasised. Wiwit said the babies
come from relationships outside of marriage. “Yes, for these babies,
honestly, mostly out of wedlock,” he said. The parents include students
and those already working. They come from the Jogja area and outside
Jogja. “The parents vary. Some from Jogja, some from outside. Some
working, some students,” he said. From preliminary examination results,
the midwifery practice has a permit. However, the baby care does not
have a specific permit like a daycare. “The midwifery practice has a
permit, but this kind of entrustment does not,” he said. Wiwit continued
that parents entrusting their children paid Rp50,000 for one child per
day. This practice has been running for the past five months. “They pay
Rp50,000 per day for one child. Of course, Rp50,000 for these children’s
needs is quite substantial, whether it’s sufficient or not, we’ll
investigate further,” he concluded. Previously, police officers and
related agencies evacuated 11 babies from a house in Padukuhan Randu
Wonokerso, Hargobinangun, Pakem, Sleman. The babies had been entrusted
to the midwife who assisted in births for the past five months. Sleman
Police Resort Criminal Investigation Head, AKP Mateus Wiwit Kustiyadi,
explained that initially, officers received information about the
presence of dozens of babies in a house from local village officials.
“Of course, we felt there was something odd about the 11 babies in
Hargobinangun at one house cared for by three people,” Wiwit told
reporters on Monday (11/5). Wiwit explained that the 11 babies were
evacuated on Friday (8/5) afternoon along with related agencies. The
babies were born in the Banyuraden, Gamping area assisted by the midwife
with initials ORP. It started with one mother giving birth at the
midwife and entrusting the baby. Then it developed to 10 other babies
entrusted to the midwife. “It started with just one person giving birth
there, then the first mother entrusted the baby to the midwife to be
cared for, perhaps out of humanity and certain reasons,” he said. This
entrustment practice has been ongoing for five months. Initially, the
location was in Gamping and only moved to Pakem at the midwife’s family
home for one week before evacuation by officers.
",
